2019 Western Sound Spring Bass run...

Very quiet morning fishing up close to shore. 1 bass on the chunk just over 32”.

Went out to the middle and a lot of happy bunker milling around. Water temp is getting up there. Hope somebody is home.

Chunked last night in 20-25 feet. Got three bass. Two shorts and one 36”. Missed one really nice run when I was on the bow trying to snag some bunker. Plenty of doggies in the mix as well. Water warmed up to 70 degrees.

This spring I have caught bass both shallow and deep. Even deep recently.
Fewer than last year, but nothing tragic. One constant is the huge numbers of fish I have marked, both deep and shallow, more than any year in the past, but they don't bite.

I'm way off last years numbers ...... bite we had dried up today. Can't ask you guys to let some slip by if you ain't whackin' em either. Taking the dory tomorrow and staying skinny to have some fun. Not even going to attempt fishing this weekend ......

I wonder if things are transitioning back to how they used to be a long time ago. Growing up (early 90's through 2000's) most of the bass fishing was CSH and East, mainly inside the harbors, 15 and then the triangle. The fish would come through in quick waves just passing through but we'd catch 20-30 fish a tide for a few weeks between 32A and the OB. After that we'd start fishing Orient in mid to late June. In the early, mid 2000's everything changed and we started to really fish more and more up west on open bottom fishing bait and the seasons would get going earlier.

The last two years some good friends who fish the triangle primarily on a daily basis are telling me they've seen the best bass fishing they've had in decades there with the pics to prove it.

I don't live in the Western Sound anymore so just speculation and topic of discussion but something I thought might be interesting.

Orient has been terrible for years though, compared to how it was before 2014 or so.

8 years ago when I got my boat the triangle was amazing trips would have people out and everyone was always bringing meat home. Would hear the other boats next to me lines flying out and then our lines would have amazing runs. Was good for 3 years and then started to die down with one here or there. I also don’t get the time out on water like I used to but I’ve been doing better fishing off beach this year just catching a bunch of schoolies Hopefully it will pick up before they are all the way out east A special thanks to the creator of this website!!!! Hopefullly we Can work together on the water so we can all enjoy the catch. I know no one likes to give There spot out cause then it’s flooded but the private messages I am willing to give any information out of where I’m fishing or where I caught. We all know bass are at a spot one day and next Day your back on the search. Special thank you to username (unc) for being in contact on the water the other night didn’t make the trip where he was fishing but we had non stop updates on how each other were doing to help each other out. Just for the future when I do go out i will post it and anyone else going out feel free to send a message. Tight lines everyone

Had a great time catching schoolies yesterday in 18" of water. They were splashing and swirling at the bait and were really fired up ! Awesome to see so many fish feeding crazy on sandeels. Different from 30 years ago when it was all cocktails and a very occasional bass. Now its all bass and an occasional blue. Caught 23 in short order and 1 blue. Took some go-pro footage I'll try and post. Felt obligated as I had asked a fellow member here to do the same ........

Very nice everybody sharing info here... I’ll try and do the same. Captain13... I love the type of fishing. When I go up to the Cape I do that almost every morning from a kayak. I paddle to the sandbars, get out and cast around numerous rips in the inner harbor near Tern Island. But for now it’s fishing the Western Sound.
What channel do you guys monitor when out? I’m always on 88a in the area of Rye, Mamaroneck, out to Stamford etc. I’m going out Monday very early and I’m hoping to have about 2 dozen fresh pieces to cut up as I’m chunking in the middle near the weather buoy. Packing a lunch too.
