2020 Western Sound Bass run ...

It sure was a beautiful morning for it!??The Sky was Carolina Blue until just about noon when someone kicked on the fan...
UNCFISH, I’ve only seen what looked like snaggable bunker once this season. That was a couple weeks ago off New Rochelle... I was trolling and the Mojos were bumping off them. Is Jacks selling them? Good Luck.

Temp.

My three night chunking outings have yielded a skate, a schoolie, and a bunker that got tangled in my braid. And that was all on one of the three nights.

Good news is that the water was 54 degrees last night, so I don't have the "water is too cold" excuse left. I'll go with "bait wasn't fresh enough" for last night. or perhaps "tide wasn't right".

Thanks for your report... I don’t feel so bad now being that I just spent an hour trolling across the sound back from Lloyd’s without a tap. Going to try for winter flounder now.

Yet another skunk job last night. fished what looked like a great incoming tide window from 7pm to 10pm. not a sniff, in three different spots. Tried 50 feet, 40 feet, 35 feet in three drastically different spots. Weatherman got the wind direction wrong again, so the wind was perfectly against the tide. Also found the tide to be pretty tame, despite a new moon tide.

anyone catching any bass out there? seems CRAZY slow. i thought it would have been so much better at this point. in 2018, I was catching 3+ fish every outing this time of year.

Hey UNC - what general locations were you fishing? PM me if you dont want to post here. What was the water temp up to now?

I've been checking my logs from the past 3 years religiously and even by 5/8 5/9 I was hitting fish pretty good, same as you said above. I am still 'stuck' down south but will be driving back next wknd, so I'm hopeful the fish are biting by then. By all normal accounts, there should be a good body of fish working its way East from Steppingstone to Execution, but from what I see here, the sound seems fairly quiet thus far...

I have been fishing many areas near execution, rye, glen cove, greenwich, bayville. i've tried a lot. can't catch anything. i was catching multiples a night in greenwich this time of year in prior years.

Water temp was 56-57 degrees last night. i've been chunking once it got to 50. rode it to 57 without a keeper bass.

This was yesterday...

I heard they are still slaying the bass in the hudson. maybe they just aren't done spawning. that's what my optimistic mind is telling myself right now. i'll keep up with the "any day now" theory...

Chunked again last night. First spot in 50 feet was nothing. Second spot in 27 feet was a schoolie. Moved again for the incoming tide in 35 feet. I was clearing my lines to go home and my last line out had a bass on it. Didn’t have a runoff or anything. It was either sitting with the bait or I had impeccable timing. It measured 34 inches and finally I had a good fight!! Water temp was 59 degrees.

It’s definately been a slow start. I primarily fish from throgsneck to Stanford. I’ve picked up 6 schoolies this year. This time last year I had 60+ fish to 44lbs.

Turned on for me last night. Got 6. two casting and 4 chunking, up to 36 inches. got a 30 incher on the cast and light tackle, that was the best one.

Been doing well the last week. Have gotten several on the incoming on the night chunk. Including my PB, a 47", 42 pounder. Everything has been released. unfortunately the tide is late the next two nights and doesn't really work for a night chunk. might try anyway.
