A GULP! Substitute? Maybe So . . .

I'm a BIG Gulp fan. Of course I'm interested in an alternative. I purchased a bunch of packs of the new Stink. They have NAILED the size, shape and color mimicking the GULP perfectly. Another plus, the stink seems to have a slight buoyancy... in other words, they do not readily sink when hung on a dropper in still water which may enhance the jigging action. Another big plus, durability wise - they are tough. On the minus side, the juice it comes soaked in seems to be an oil that will quickly wash off... the Stink is rubbery as opposed to more the organic and absorbent Gulp. The thing to do I believe with the stink is too apply a smelly gel like "PRO CURE" and or add some felt or sponge washers ahead of the Stink grub on the hook. The felt or sponge washers should be soaked in gulp juice. I will be trying this out and we will see what happens. I am pissed that Gulp changed the formula and made them softer and way less durable which has opened the door for stuff like STINK to get a foothold.

John Skinner, on one of his videos, shows a neat solution to losing the tails on Gulp. He leaves the Gulp body on for scent and adds an Otter curly tail for action. Worth a try.

Assume you mean John Skinner. He has brothers Bob and Brian, but no Al...

After donating far too many Gulp worms on trips when the small Sea Bass and other pests were present I too tried the Otter Tails trick with the rest of the Grub Body still on the shank of my hook. I must admit my results were also poor, like Eddie's experience.

Despite the typically high price of Gulp, if you are a careful shopper you can get some excellent pricing on the stuff. Right now Dick's Sporting Goods is having a 2 packs for $10 sale and Berkley has started up it's $5 Factory Rebate coupon for the purchase of every 2 packages. When you combine the two you wind up with a $2.50 cost per pack, less tax. There is a limit of 4 rebates per address for the Berkley deal so I ran out today and picked up my 8 packs. Getting $56 worth of Gulp for $20 is a pretty good deal in my book.

Mike-
Can you share some of those details??
I stopped in the Patchogue store yesterday and saw absolutely no mention of any sale or rebate displayed anywhere?
Was it better marked in Riverhead perhaps??
Thanks!

Ahhh... Never mind Mike. I forgot we were talking about it on the other site and found your update there!!
Heading up to River City this morning!!

I couldn't find it this morning. was it a flash one day deal? Any exclusions? THNX, CIAO, John

I was very lucky last year. 2018 GULP! stuff.
Incidental GULP! by catch: Sea bass, bluefish, striped bass, weakfish, porgies, ling, one dumb seagull and too many assorted trash fish.
Depending on conditions, fishing for fluke with Otter tails remnants vs 100% GULP! intact: 0 to 50% success. Depending on conditions, I will fish GULP! exclusively
for Ling.

PJII - Unlike pretty much everyone that fishes on my rig, I LOVE catching big ling - for my "Ling Oreganata toaster oven" recipe! We see a lot of decent-sized ling early in the fluke deep jigging season - like late May through early June. Not much better out there, as far as delicate taste goes. Not much better that we can regularly catch, that is.

Anyway, its gotten to the point that one of my friends will try to shake off a big ling at the boat, rather than deal with unhooking the slimy little bastid - which then deprives ME of a tasty dinner treat. When he does this he thinks my freak-out is pretty funny, truth be told - and the guy's a pro chef, too. Anyway, those big ling really do love GULP!, don't they?

P1 - I try my damnedest not to patronize Dick's, as I'm right with ya on the Anti-2A stuff. And truth be told, I've never fired a gun in my life! Its the principle of the thing. Screw Dick's! ?

I am not a tree hugger. But never had the time for anything but fishing in my life. it gives me the best peace of mind that my son and daughter-in law living in Florida are ready and able to defend themselves and my 2 precious grandsons. My son says his wife kicks his butt at the range, Living here in Queens ain't easy as far as my 2nd amendment rights. But at least our co op has security patrolling 24/7 365 days in cars and officers in plain clothes patrolling on foot. in solidarity with my son and my bros on NYANGLER.COM, I will never set foot in the PC unnamed Anti-2A stores again from this moment. When I have time, I will cancel my account, This is more important than $$. CIAO, John

When seconds count, police are just minutes away. As for the appropriately named Dick's, they have got nothing that I can't get for the same price elsewhere.

and Lep, we have simply got to change that one aspect of your life. Do you have a Nassau county leisure pass ? Ammo's on me. I just fired some off yesterday at Mitchel Field. Four bucks weekdays for a Nassau senior. Hard to beat that deal.
