Archery

With my preference for warmer weather kayakfishing, my wife just getting her second cataract surgery yesterday, I haven't even taken the cover off our Sea Pro yet, but I did give my shoulders a try last week and with OK results. I had shot a recurve for a few years until the "unSAFE" Act of our precious governor convinced me to sell off some semi-auto rifles I had. Used some of the money to get a compound setup from Smith Point Archery in Patchogue. (Highly recommend them there.) Two years ago a lot of shoulder problems surfaced. Tried accupuncture, some relief, but the physical therapy and a cortisone shot last spring helped more. Finally decided to see if I could handle the bow which I dialed down to just 39 or 40 lb pull. Went to the county range at Cedar Creek Park and got off 5 sets before the 6th had me straining a bit. Accuracy was there, and so was the enjoyment. Weather stays this cool I will probably go again. A word of caution for you new to Cedar Creek. If you don't bring it you ain't got it. Its like shooting at Calverton but worse, no restrooms or even a porta john. Uncrowded on weekdays. sometimes a horror show on weekends.

Don’t get caught. Same law as for firearms. Used to do the same as a Matzahpizza teen

Took a walk Saturday. Not far but off the path. Happens every few years and I swear each time I'll buy whatever it takes to deter them, CHIGGERS!
Got me good too. I always look for ticks. Haven't seen hardly any last season in same area that are normally infested. Flicked off one at the truck. Got home and felt an ich around my ankle. Pull down my sock and was like FUCK!!! Barely disable but obvious when your experienced. Immediately all clothes in dryer on hot and was taking a sponge bath with bleach. The ich is insane now and I got them everywhere not just up to my knees.
Figured I'd pass it on as since they started showing up around thirty years ago. They had high and low years. Could be a HIGH year. Deep woods off did nothing to stop them.

We can't talk hunting anymore without talking ticks... Anyway, I started using permethrin about a decade ago and except for seeing a tick or two abandon a downed deer, have been lucky. I don't want to even bother with Off or any alleged repellant for that matter. I want to kill each and every one of them. If we could kill off the feral cats that decimate the ground bird population, birds which feast off of ticks, it would be a big help. Am hoping the spread of coyotes will help since the gubmint won't do s_it.

Big fan of permathrin. Doesn't repel actually kills ticks if they get on you. Lasts for ...it says like 40 days and 6 washings but I reapply every month. No ticks since I started using it.

Don't think a bird would pay much mind to chiggers. I've got them putting in steps while climbing all over my arms.

You must bring your own. Some Nassau Bowmen club has a shed there with their own, but they have some sort of a sweetheart deal with the county. There are three picnic tables with attached benches just behind the line but are often occupied. Bring a wire to stick in the dirt to hold your arrows unless you like using a quiver the whole time. Only restroom is near the parking lot. I use a dolly or one of those ancient suitcase carriers to wheel in my target.
Remember, its self run, so avoid weekends if you can, as some parents are totally oblivious and their little urchins run out to get an errant arrow without waiting for everyone to acknowledge "CLEAR" being called out.

Then there is some know-it-all at the left along the bike path side that continues or starts to shoot while people are still returning with their arrows from the right or east side. Used to be a sign prohibiting crossbows, might still be there.

On the chiggers they are really baby lonestar ticks but with that Deep woods off even the 100% older stuff does NOT do anything to stop them or any tick for that matter what you need is Sawyers permethrin spray make sure you spray your socks too . This year we have a bumper crop of them and why not its 2020 ,also stop and get one of those sticky peel away lint rollers and roll them up and down your legs you will be amazed at how many youll get stuck on that live or dead . Dead if you used the sawyers spray.Tommorrow is opening day of the bow season on the island be safe have fun and if you didnt spray your cloths yet WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU WAITING FOR!!!
