so I'm sitting on my back porch the other day enjoying the weather when I hear barking dogs - several barking dogs - getting closer
then I hear hooves coming up my driveway

- followed by a panicked deer who nearly runs into the side of my car
seems the dogs were after the deer - good sized one with the beginning of a rack peeking through his skull
now I have a split rail fence surrounding my driveway on three sides - one side with a large growth Lantana growing 6 to 8 feet in height - about 4 to 6 feet wide
there is also a gate without the gate on it (took it down when Max passed)
does the deer come through the gate?
nooooooooooooooo
he leaps over the fencing landing in the middle of the Lantana crushing it - rolls/flops around a bit as the dogs enter my backyard (they came through the gate) - 4 of 'em
the deer finally regains his footing - shakes himself off just as the dogs start for him - darts across the backyard to the other side & leaps the split rail over there this time not landing on top of anything & bolts down the street & away
I've now got 4 fairly large mean & pissed off looking dogs in my backyard. They're circling where the deer went over the fence growling & barking because their quarry just eluded them - then they look in my direction & start advancing.
All I had was a baseball bat which happened to be on my porch. Don't remember why it as there - been there for a month or two - but I'm glad it was. Afraid to turn my back on them & try to make it to the sliding backdoor I begin beating it against one of the supports for the portico I have over the porch & yelling obscene phrases. Apparently they didn't like foul language & began backing up toward the gate opening.
Feeling brave now I charge them yelling more obscenities & banging the bat against the brick patio I put in last year.
That did it - they fled.
Now where the deer came over the fence & landed in my Lantana is to the left side of the below picture.
No time to photograph the deer or the dogs,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Think I may put the gate back up.
