Boat overturns near Liberty Island killing an infant and a woman

14 people on a 22ft boat.

If only they had taken a boating safety class all of this could have been avoided.

Personal rants aside, how tragic for these people. Prayers for the families and those lost. 🙁

One of the things empasized in a Safe Boating Class is dont exceed the limits on the capacity plate
The capacity plate tells the operator the maximum load capacity of the vessel
in both people and pounds
My 2013 22’ boat has no capacity plate, just an exemption from Diurnal Emissions Standards. As soon as I saw 12 people on that I commented OVERLOAD!!, but without a capacity plate, how is a Captain to know?

I called the MFG and was told it was a thing of the past.

I had a 23ft Boston Whaler I can’t imagine having 14 people on my boat. I’m sure this was an unlicensed excursion 😡 throw the book at this A hole.

None of the 14 people thought that it was unsafe?
Common sense is highly underrated.

And another is having enough life jackets on board!

What is common sense to most is not to all.

I do feel bad for the people on the boat who may have thought they were safe and the owner would know better. Ever watch those Haulover YouTube videos where the bow runner with like 15 people, most in the front hit the waves?

Typical news media this morning, he's in federal custody facing 13 NYPD charges.

Say do what?

The feds are locking people up on behalf of the NYPD now with federal misconduct and neglect of a ship officer resulting in death, following initial local reckless endangerment counts by the NYPD.
Federal prosecutors took over the case and filed initial charges of federal misconduct and neglect of a ship officer resulting in death. This was following initial local reckless endangerment, 13 counts charged, by the NYPD. Additional federal charges will likely be filed, and the Feds will take jurisdiction over this case.

Well, whoever wrote the copy sure didn't express that at all. They made it sound the way I described it. It's just another example of sloppy journalism.
