Captain's Table -Solid Bottom Fishing Week

Sorry for the late report but last week was a blur with 4 charters and a couple of recreational trips mixed in. My charters were mainly a group of bottom fishing trips for 3 very nice families and groups of friends.

Starting last Monday, I had Andy and his kids out to do some damage on the Porgy population east of Gardiners Island. The 4 kids ranging in age from 9 to 15 were very tuned in to the solid Scup bite and put together a fine catch for their planned Fish Taco party later that day. Vesper the 9 y/o girl was red hot with perfect timing and style and she really showed the older kids how it was done. Leilia caught a couple of Sea Bass to mix things up and Jake landed the always exciting to the kids sand shark that he was most proud of!

Then on Thursday I had 91 y/o Max join me for his first Sea Bass trip of the season with 2 of his adult friends. Beautiful conditions in the Sound just north of Plum found steady action with the biscuits and following a lot of sorting they guys were able to put 7 nice keepers plus a half dozen Scup in the box for Max’s legendary ceviche. I was so busy bating hooks, removing fish, and fileting the catch I did not have a chance to get any photos of the happy crew.

On Saturday my Porgy fans from NJ hopped aboard to return the scene of Monday’s hot action off Gardiiners. With really nice cool temperatures and light winds the crew of 5 enjoyed non stop Scup action for a solid 4 hours. The crew easily took their boat limit of medium to large Scup with a few Sea Bass mixed in and a lone stray mackerel! They had so much fun they have already booked a repeat trip for the month of August.

Despite the very challenging Fluke conditions I have a few Montauk trips lined up for next month and am hoping we can put the customers on a decent Fluke bite then. Personally, I feel if we get the weather and sea conditions we need, I will find the fish.

Tight lines to all as the summer rolls on!
