Certainly seems to be a debatable topic...

An Open Letter to Dr. A.S. Fauci, Director NIAID, NIH

Posted on December 20, 2020

(Please see the following open letter statement authored by members of the GBS|CIDP Foundation International medical community as referenced.)

As clinician/scientists who have spent careers studying GBS, we are concerned that your statement on the “New Normal” television show about GBS and the COVID vaccine will have unintended consequences. Your statement is already all over the internet with many believing it to be true and acting accordingly.

On the television show, you stated that people who had GBS in the past should avoid the COVID vaccines as they may cause another episode of GBS. GBS was associated with the 1976/1977 swine flu vaccine at a rate of about 1 case/100,000 vaccinees. Since then, the only vaccine associated with GBS has been the flu vaccine at a rate of 1 extra case of GBS/1,000,000 vaccinees, that is, 21 cases when 20 are expected (Salmon et al. Guillain-Barré Syndrome Following Influenza Vaccines Affords Opportunity to Improve Vaccine Confidence. The Journal of Infectious Diseases, jiaa544, Guillain-Barré Syndrome Following Influenza Vaccines Affords Opportunity to Improve Vaccine Confidence). In a survey conducted in the Netherlands, people who had GBS in the past were queried about whether they had another GBS episode following seasonal flu vaccine, and the answer was an unequivocal ‘No’ in over 100 recovered GBS persons, many of whom received multiple flu vaccines over many years (Kuitwaard et al. Recurrences, vaccinations and long-term symptoms in GBS and CIDP. JPNS 2009;14:310–315). This study and the published literature does not support the idea that people who had GBS in the past should avoid vaccines in the future (Principi and Esposito. Vaccine-preventable diseases, vaccines and Guillain-Barre’ syndrome. Vaccine 2019;37:5544- 5550 and Hawken et al. Simulation Study of the Effect of Influenza and Influenza Vaccination on Risk of Acquiring Guillain-Barré Syndrome. Emerg Infect Dis 2015;21:224–231). In fact, the CDC recommends that everyone get the flu vaccine as the benefits of the vaccine outweigh the risks of GBS (GBS (Guillain-Barré Syndrome) and Vaccines | Vaccine Safety | CDC). Any risk of GBS or that people with past GBS should avoid either the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine or the Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine is not listed in the FDA authorized package insert for either product.

To date, no cases of GBS have been associated with the COVID vaccines. However, the number of subjects in the clinical trials is too small to detect such a rare event, if it existed, and surveillance is ongoing. In the meantime, we would urge all to follow national and local guidelines about who should get the vaccine. At this time, there is no reason that those who had GBS in the past cannot get the current COVID vaccines. If they have concerns, they should speak to their local health care professionals.

Sincerely yours,

EU looks at vaccine certificates to help summer tourism

BRUSSELS — The European Union is looking at a common vaccine certificate to help get travelers to their vacation destinations and prevent tourism from suffering another disastrous year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the certificates for individuals who have been vaccinated could be combined with COVID-19 tests for those awaiting shots to allow as many people as possible to travel during the summer, which is vital for warm weather Mediterranean destinations like Greece, Italy and Spain.

The issue will likely be discussed during a video meeting of EU leaders next week. Europeans have been concerned residents might be split into two camps – those with vaccine certificates permitting them to travel and others who remain limited in where they can go.

But von der Leyen said such discrimination is unnecessary because “you can always combine either a certificate or a negative COVID test, if you did not have access to a vaccination so far.”

“So there are possibilities to find a fair and equal balance,” she said during a visit to Portugal’s capital, Lisbon, on Friday.

Nations that depend heavily on tourism are worried that a second consecutive summer holiday season impacted by the pandemic would hit their tourism industries even harder than the first one.

Prime Minister Antonio Costa of Portugal, which holds the EU’s rotating presidency and has some of Europe’s most popular Atlantic beaches, said that “tourism is particularly important to our economies,” hence the need for the most unfettered travel possible.

“It’s essential that when we do move into the next summer that we feel safe and that others feel safe to travel to Portugal and also go to Greece,” he said.

The Greek government came up with the vaccine certificate plan. Greece will be issuing digital vaccination certificates to each person vaccinated against COVID-19.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said he had already proposed the EU adopt such a certificate across the bloc, and von der Leyen said she welcomed the initiative.

“We have every reason to be in the first line of the countries fighting so that transportation, the movement of European citizens, can be as free as possible,” Mitsotakis told his country’s lawmakers. “We believe that this vaccination certificate must obtain a European character, so that the European countries can share, without discrimination, this information in the same way.”

Vaccinations have started across the 27-nation EU, but it is far from clear what proportion of the population will be vaccinated in time for the summer season.

Was on the computer for over 3hrs Thurs& finally got two vaccine appointments for the bride & I at Stony Brook, only to have the State say the link should have not been out yet & the appointments were cancelled. Back on line at 5AM today & got two appointments at Aqueduct race track 3rd week in Feb. One step closer to something that resembles normal.

(y) (y)(y) Please remember that the "Post Vaccination Normal" means you're still masking and social distancing, for both your health and others since you can still get infected and you may be infectious, even if you're not symptomatic. It just means you'll be spared a visit to the hospital if you do come down with COVID, which in itself will be a great relief, especially if either of the 2 of you have underlying conditions.

It's going a long time before "back to normal" is the "normal" that we're all aching for...

I have given up for the time being trying to find a site. I am NOT driving into the city or upstate to get it, but will go anywhere in Nassau and Queens. Every time I hear about a new site with shots, its closed as soon as I get on the website. Still hoping that eventually my local pharmacies may get some. The bride is hoping that all those promises that she will get the second shot come to fruition. since I just deer hunt, get takeout, and maybe go shooting a few times until May, I am not that concerned, just frustrated and pissed off with the politicos allegedly running the show. If we hadn't downsized the military so drastically since Desert Storm that would have been my hope. The military knows how to run things. And just as I postulated months ago, I keep seeing more and more references to this virus being man-made, not natural, and having its origin in Wuhan, where the chicoms have their bacteriological warfare center.

did you check with your doctor?
Called mine. They will be administering the vaccine as soon as they get it.

Good point Larry i will call during the week. Doctors here don’t have the vaccine (yet) but I should ask if they ever will. If i had a choice I would want the MRNA shot, but mine are a husband and wife, not a conglomerate

I got that idea after multiple tries at getting my first ever flu shot from CVS last month. Kept going there & either they were out of the 65 year old shot or it was an hour & half wait. Called my doctor - they gave me a net day appointment - in & out in like 10 minutes.
