Firewood

don't know what area of the country the link I posted covered...........

Tried to google it for both Nassau Co. & NYS this was all I found concerning chimney placement:
Didn't say it couldn't - didn't say you could

Didn't actually say anything regarding wall vs. roof - just take it out through the shortest route possible.
I am however seeing a lot of sites talking about through the wall venting.

As I said - I have seen them through the wall in NY.

I'll be installing the garage stove with a thru the wall system :

yeah - they warm up a bit but they are also the next ones going into the stove - helps with the seasoning process
If it works for you OK, but my concern is when opening the door to reload it looks to me like the door swings out past those logs. Burning/hot embers could unknowingly fall on top of them without you realizing it, smolder, then a bit later you have some issues... Especially after a cocktail or 2 when you you let your guard down.

Most new stoves/inserts are super efficient- 80% or more and the heat loss through the chimney is minimal which is what I believe allows the thru wall installations to be OK.
Looking at what Mitch has, that might be the way to go. You still get the fireplace feel with the added benefit of the heat.

I like your type of stove where you can see the fire. To many stoves don't have that feature.

That was actually a big factor in going with the one we did Joe! Our house had 2 Fireplaces in it when we move in. The one in the living room where we installed the insert had a huge firebox and there's actually another in the back den/kitchen wing. I've considered putting another insert back there to supplement when we get these super cold snaps. Honestly, I have no clue what the effect on draft what have and if the 2 would compete for the same intake air???

but Mitch's is an insert in a fireplace - hence building a fireplace with chimney then buying an insert to go in it - you're wayyyy north of $10,000 - existing fireplace - yeah - a good way to go - although - you can hook a free standing stove into that chimney - again - you pick up the ambient heat from the stove (iron) itself in addition to whatever the blower is sending out - which you don't get with an insert

before I had the stove - I would have put an insert into any home I bought that had a fireplace - now that I have the stove - I'd probably go with a free standing stove using the fireplace chimney for venting (it's that ambient heat thing) - I can boil water or cook if I so desired on top of my stove

that's another thing - stoves/inserts dry out the air in a room - stove allows you to overcome that by being able to place a "bowl" of water on top of them which puts moisture back into the air - I used the word bowl for lack of a better word - if you look at the picture I posted - there's a cast iron thingamabob (there's actually a real word for them but I don't remember it so thingamabob will have to do) on top of the stove - takes about a quart or more of water - I have to refill it each day as it almost evaporates out in its entirety

I think the fireplace adds to the ambiance of the room more than a stove does. So the added price can be justified.

The modular home models we're interested in all had fireplaces in the family room so instead of an open fireplace I'll do an insert with a large glass window in the door. I went to the hearthstone forum and the consensus there was the insert is better for general heating of a home. That said and like wader's experience I also heat my current home with a wood stove and am very happy with it. We haven't broken 15o in Farmingdale the wind chills have been below zero all day and the sun is starting to set for another cold night. Stay warm guys.

SS- That's funny... I have that exact same weather station display in the back coldest wing in my house. It says says its up to 9 outside now and 65 in that wing with no heat running. In this extreme cold I kick the heat on every so often so the hot water heat loops cycle every to keep them moving just in case...
Lots of similarities CC and my favorite sirius channel is 23.

23 is what channel?

Mine had been 21 - I think is was 21 (the Loft) but they moved that to streaming. Mostly now on the Tom Petty Channel, Deep Tracks & lately Spectrum (28).

of course it goes to Seriously Sinatra when I'm in that "Martini State of Mind"....................

Is that a dutch oven on the stove? What cha cookin?

mentioned that earlier - must have gotten lost in the verbiage - it's a cast iron thingamabob filled with water - insert & free standing really dry out the air - that puts it back in as the water evaporates

yes- I can cook on it if I ever got that desperate - another advantage to the free standing stove
