Flounder

Well-Known Angler
So my hunting crew left yesterday for Massachusetts. Today they went out at a 11 o’clock till 3 and put a boat limit of winter flounder on the boat. Also 2 keeper Bass on flounder rigs. Definitely brings back old memories. And to drop salt in the wound I was supposed to be. Anyway I’m glad they went and did well. Hopefully I get a few pieces tomorrow when they get back. Was a five man crew.

The early 1980's it was flat fishing heaven in Long Island Bays. You could easily catch 30 migrating flounder in Reynolds Channel right across from the Town Of Hempstead Boat ramp in Point Lookout - right over next to the marsh you anchored and flounder action for hours. Then I'd let a squid strip drift back into the current and I caught Fluke the same trip. Unbelievable !!!
I always wanted to make a trip up to Quincy and now I'd like to go to catch my first flounder in 32-33 years.
What happened to the Raritan Bay/ Moriches Flounder Fishing ?

Pangaroo // Hunter i remember this is like 50 years ago I always fished with my friends father he had a large criss craft we would flounder fish off princess bay ( on raritan bay) and we did great back then,,, we would drop anchor and dragged it around in a circle first to get the bottom turned up,,,, than Set the anchor off (buoy4) I made the mojoe chum,,,,, white rice dyed red// corn//clam// fish flavor cat food in a big 5gal bucket and we chummed with that,,,, we caught alot,,, (doubles too) days we got 75 and days we counted up to 125 between both of us in a few hours maybe half of day ,,,, no (BS) ,,,and we threw back all the smaller flounders,,,, boy those were the days ,,,,, if we only knew not to keep that many flounders back then .,,,,,we ate for weeks:rolleyes:,,,, the memory's :),,,,,,,,, ps back then you didn't have to chum and catch flounder,,,,,,,,,,,,,friends stay well ,,,,,,,,,,,,><)))):>

This was a boat limit in three hours. Back in the day it was flounder everywhere. Yes we all probably kept to many. But I believe the use of fertilizer, seals. Birds of prey and many other things contribute to the lack of flounder. Nothing but memories now.

Another memory hunter and friends as a child,,,,,,,,,,, when my brother and I was young my father and mother took us on vacation ,,,,there was a place in Hampton bays call marine rest the guys name was Jim (I never forget a name) :) ,,,,,, he rented a few cottages and he had a small motel with swimming pool,,,,,, my parents rented one of his full cottages my mother didnot mine to cook,,,,,,,she loved to cook for us even on vacation ,,,,,,,as long we stay there Jim rented row boats ,,,,,,,,,,but he gave you a free rowboat for the your stay there ,,, yes free :),,,,,my father had a seahorse Johnson 10 hp outboard that we bought with us,,,,we put in on the rowboat and we were set to fish all week,,,,,,yes hunter flounder everywere,,,,,, we flounder fished everyday there i think it was tinabay ???,,,and caught many flounder with no chum,,,, my father leaned how to fillet by watching everyone there ,,,, and he did a fine job a it 8-),,,,,,, Jim had deep freezers there to keep your catch,,,,,,,,my father//brother// and I fished for flounders all the time there,,,,, by the end of vacation we had flounder for our aunts uncles and friends,,,,,my father over the years when he was living (rest his soul),,,, he always told me when we fished there we had about 4oo pounds of flounder we bought home :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO: when we fished in Hampton bays and comming home with all them flounder with all our other stuff for vacation that we had had in the trunk with all them flounder,,, Joe remember on the southern state the back bumper was just about dragging :ROFLMAO:,,,, the memory we had as a child ,,,,,,,,,,, I also fished Jim's docks early in the morning before light and caught ton of snappers till my father woke up so we could go to catch more flounders :),,,,,,,, the days gone by 😢,,,,,friends stay well,,,,,,ps does anyone remember Oscar's boat rental in Hampton bays they were down the road from marine rest he had yellow rowboats I think ,,,,,, by for now,,,,,,,><)))):>

Well.......last I checked they had fertilizer and seals up in Boston harbor. Not being facetious but flounder like the cold water. When I see pompano and Cobia being caught here the last few seasons it leads me to believe that fish are adapting to warmer temperatures and moving north. Lobster, cod, flounder, whiting and now even bunker can all be found in abundance North of the Cape. Hmm

There’s no more eel grass left in bay. Who knows what it could be. All I know is I miss those flounder days. And my fellow hunting fishing buddies had a good trip without me.
