Gulf of Mexico

MakoMatt

Angler
Made a right turn out of Venice Inlet yesterday, and headed to some reefs up in the Sarasota area in search of Kingfish. Found plenty of life with pods of Blue runner’s which we live lined, and slow trolled. Had a couple nice ones on, but they managed their escape. Lot’s of Spanish Mackerel, and one 250-300 Bull Shark which beat me up pretty good. The highlight of the day was an enormous Cobia my brother had on. It made several spectacular jumps before earning its freedom. Nothing for the table, but kept some fish for use as baits on future trips, including this stinking Barracuda.

Nice trip!

Was supposed to get down to St James City in January and fish inshore with a good friend. He was going to line up another friend to get us out in the Gulf of America for a trip but now all is up in the air with a knee rehab.

Questions like that are frightening. Inexperienced boaters/anglers are the main cause of injuries and death on the water. I will give you a general education.

Wrong again, and on many levels…….
Level one…….. The U.S has approximately 1,631 miles of coastline of the Gulf of Mexico……… Mexico has approximately 1,743 miles of coastline of the Gulf of Mexico.

Level two will explain to you how international bodies of water are named…….
  • National governments: have the power to name the bodies of water within their borders or contiguous with their shorelines. They can also pass legislation to change or standardize names within their own jurisdiction, though this may not have an immediate international impact.

  • For example, the U.S. Board on Geographic Names (BGN) is the U.S. federal authority for standardizing geographic names for federal use.
International level
  • UNGEGN: deals with the national and international standardization of geographical names, but its recommendations are not legally binding.

  • The IHO promotes the standardization of nautical charts and publications. Its publication, Limits of Oceans and Seas, has historically influenced naming conventions, but its recommendations can also be contentious.

  • For naming undersea features, the GEBCO Sub-Committee on Undersea Feature Names (SCUFN) is responsible for defining nomenclature for features in international waters.
How a name becomes international
  • A country may first enact a national policy to rename a body of water.
  • To achieve international recognition, the country must then coordinate with international bodies like the UNGEGN and IHO.

  • It is also necessary to secure diplomatic agreements with other countries that border the body of water.

  • A name becomes internationally accepted through a combination of these efforts, with widespread use by international organizations, mapping services, and media outlets being key.

Trump has as much right to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico, as he does to change the names of the Atlantic or Pacific Oceans. Which is, no right to.

Not the President, N.O.A.A., or the Federal Register have the authority to change the name of an INTERNATIONAL BODY OF WATER.

They only have the authority to change the name of what the United States wants to call it, not the rest of the world.
