Its Hot

Although its too windy to kayak here, the wind off the ocean, even though its somewhat south westerly, is making it quite palatable. Just watered all our potted flowers and the heat is much easier to take so far than it was yesterday morning. Of course there are more clouds today as well.

Fearing a surge in heat deaths, Phoenix adds refrigerated containers to store bodies

An ominous sight has appeared in downtown Phoenix, where temperatures Wednesday were expected to top 110 degrees for a 27th straight day — refrigerated containers capable of holding bodies.

Ten of the 8-by-20-foot coolers were trucked in this week to a parking lot near the office of the Maricopa County medical examiner, a county official confirmed.

“While we typically see a surge in intakes in July, this year has been worse than prior years,” said Jason Berry, a Maricopa County spokesman.

The M.E.’s office has what Berry called "standard capacity," which means room to store 224 bodies. And it has "surge capacity," which means extra space can be carved out to hold up to 358 bodies, he said.

No bodies are being stored in those containers now, Berry said.

The M.E.'s office has recorded 25 "heat-associated deaths" this year, and 249 are still under investigation.

Thought I would beat the heat by paddling early. I think it was hotter or at least more uncomfortable at 0715 than it was when I started paddling back around 1030, even towing the single fish I caught. Kept dunking my hat and putting the feet in over the sides. But I never felt like Red Fox ("its the big one comin'") Cleaned the fish and jumped in the pool. 88° here now but mostly cloudy with a light warm breeze. Got 1/8" of rain overnight. Tomorrow Saturday is supposed to be worse. Good day to hit the library or Netflix.
