Leader for fluke

"I am a believer in Flourocarbon for shallow water fluke and DEFINITELY Tog. The water is typically cleaner and clearer in the fall and winter and those big tog are pretty smart. The Salmon and Red Label offer a good enough quality at a cheaper price than the high end stuff, and in my opinion, work just as well."

Frank (NYSharpie) mentions one instance where I can tell you with little doubt that "fluro" outfished mono leader. Side-by-side, he did better than I did while tog jigging. To be 100% accurate, he is waaay more dedicated to the technique than I am and sticks with it for much longer portions of a day than I will. I'm still in "traditional" mode for tog about 80% of the time.

Like I've said, I am always looking for an edge, ESPECIALLY where tog & fluke fishing are concerned. I will continue to give fluro a shot on every trip I make and see if it changes my mind.

As Eddie (Savvy18) mentioned, I used the 40LB Seaguar Salmon FC leader (It is actually a FC and Mono blend as I was told by the guys at Jigging World)

From the Seguar website:
"STS is 100% fluorocarbon leader material that delivers incredible abrasion resistance and maximum impact and knot strength, all with a smaller line diameter than monofilament. This fast-sinking line gets you in the “strike zone” quicker - and with a lower refractive index than monofilament line, it is significantly less visible underwater. "

While companies are likely to "puff" their products, an outright lie is unlikely. I wonder where the Jigging World guys got their info. That said, I'm not sure if there is an exact definition of "fluorocarbon" with respect to fishing line, so maybe STS does use more of the polymers typically used to make mono, and they can still call it 100% FC.

Still, not sure how they manage the big price difference, but it makes me much happier when I cut off a big tag end.

I've been using 40-50lb. Big Game for years when making my own rigs.

However; the 2 fluke in my avatar I was using "Hurricane" brand fluke rigs (bought at Walmart) but I would replace the kahle hook with a 4/0 Eagle Claw silver hook. The leader on these rigs are a clear 60lb, don't know the brand of it tho. The fluke(s) didn't seem to mind the heavier leader.:p

I stick with 30lb. fluorocarbon line for my leader material when fluking. I buy large spools of it from "BULLBUSTER's" website. I fish with Suffix 20# braid as my main line. Call me crazy, but I have to believe this is helping with our catches and enticing larger smarter units to chew.
As far as togging, we use 50# fluoro for the top shots.
