Let's hear your favorite fluke set ups.

For me i have several and if i had to choose 1 it would be the Phenix UMBX 10-20. Just love the feel of it quick on the set up but nice moderate action. Have it set up with a abu winch gen 3 just a sweet set up and excellent rod for up to 4 oz with the sweet spot 2-3oz.

Close 2nd is a Custom rod from Capt Neil the Hydra mb 876 with a calcutta 50 te a bit more moderate action but very sensitive rod and really nice when its is loaded up with a nice fluke the moderate action absorbs the head shakes real nice.

3rd is the and cts bj700 set up with a very hard to find Abu Garcia Record 4600. Like the Hydra very moderate action on it.

On the spinning front hands dowm the Phenix UMBX 8-17 with my Shimano Stradic 3000FB. So light in the hand but when needed has the power for a bigger fish.

Ok lets hear your favorite fluke set ups.

Hey Joe, who turned you on to those Phenix blanks?

Remember that day on Frankie's boat when you asked me if you could use it? I think you proceeded to catch 4 or 5 keepers in the next two hours to my 1! Think you were "hooked" on that Phenix right then and there.

I'd have to agree, my favorite fluke rod is the Phenix UMBX 8-17 as well. When I first picked up that blank, I knew it was going to make a perfect fluke jigger in my sweet-spot of 1-2 ounce jigs. Such a great feel to that rod. When I designed it, I wanted to do a neon-green & purple color theme. That left me with VERY few options at the time for a reel to match (my rods and reels all have to match perfectly - Yes, it's a sickness). I chose the Okuma Serrano 200 and have been pleased with the reel so far.

However, it's not my favorite fluke reel. I have two actually. Both new to my arsenal in early 2018. The 13 Fishing Inception & the Quantum Accurist PT100 that has the flipping switch. What a great feature to have on a fluke jigging reel. Absolutely love it. Once I get a few of my older reels sold, I'm going to buy the newest version of that reel, the Accurist S3 in either neon green or blue.

I have a UMBX also that I had originally built to pitch soft plastics in the bay for bass , but it turn into my go to fluke jigger up to 3 oz bucktails. Great blanks !!

This is easy. My very favorite two besties are a CN-built DNY Impact 6' "H", carrying a Curado 200E5 and the same CN-built Hydra MB876 that Joe/Flukinit mentioned (cut to 6'8") , carrying a very custom Gen3 Revo Winch. What beautiful setups those two are. Honorable mention would be my JW Ghost Hunter 150gram slow pitch jigger, soon to be carrying a customized Daiwa Fuego, or maybe a new Gen4 Revo Winch - we'll see how that goes. I also loved and very much miss my JW Silver Bullet 200g slow pitch rod - but last August that one's tip snapped off under very suspicious circumstances, and so it is no more. Will not replace it. Great rod, while it lasted. You can see it in my profile pic to the left, with its slick Daiwa TD Zillion Coastal aboard.

Yep, my Abu Garcia Gen 3 Revo Winch is definitely one of my favorite reels too! I throw that on my CTS BS702 when I need to put on a little lead or when I'm fishing live bait for fluke. Had a 10+ last year on that combo!

Released to fight another day!!!

Nice picture Eddie! Great job on the release for that big girl.

As you know Joe, ALL my fish over 10 lbs. get released. Fluke AND tog! I'd release more of the bigger fish (anything over 7 lbs.) if it weren't frowned upon by the fillet lovers on the boat! Call me crazy but I'm starting to feel like releasing the big fish is nearly as much fun as catching them :geek:

I also haven't kept a keeper bass in at least 10 years.

We each make our own personal decisions regarding what the right / wrong thing to do are.

Hi Eddie,
Sorry I did not recognize your handsome mug while replying to a post on the rod building thread. First, you are a much nobler fisherman than me, or I am just too hungry! With all the fish lovers in my family it's hard to toss back the DD's.
As I mentioned there my ultimate Fluke outfit is the CTS CN702 with a Shimano Chronarch loaded with 20" Suffix camo. Also cited before I had an incredible streak this summer landing three10#+ Fluke on that rig off Montauk's south side . Of course, according to Pete, it's amazing I land anything on that reel the way I "beat it up" in his mind!!:giggle:

Hah! "In my mind?" That's funny! What's "amazing" is that your handle still turns by the end of the fluke season! A tribute to your reel guy's patience and aptitude!

Nice fish though!

OK, truth be told if it wasn't for my "Reel Doctor" that Chronarch would probably be in the trash heap by now. As if you don't know it by now I do fish a lot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don't feel ashamed Mike, Pete thinks EVERY reel he opens up (besides his own and maybe mine - we'll have to ask him) are a disaster! I'm sure he's right too...I've seen the way my fishing buddies treat their gear. It's pretty sad.

Actually Eddie I wasn't feeling ashamed until Pete started showing photos of the inside of my reels to the guys at last years dinner! I shudder to think what might be revealed this year!o_O
Thanks for the compliments on the photo. One of my charter customers is really good with the camera; I have thought about hiring him to be my press agent!! :)

What's up guys! I was reading the posts and needed to get in on this discussion! It's amazing how my preference in Fluke tackle has evolved over the last 3-4 years. If you were to ask me this question 3 years ago, I would have told you that my favorite combo for jigging was my 6.6 G-Loomis IMX 10-17 with my 150 shimano calcutta. This was before I started using slim profile reels, like the Diawa Lexa 100P (love this reel).

This year was evolutionary for me, and I probably had the best success, all around for jigging, bay and ocean, with my new favorite combo. Here it is - For the rod it is the Diawa Proteous MH 6-3 with Split Grip. Just an unbelievably sensitive and strong rod, great for jigging up to 3-4 ounces. Super light sensitive enough to feel every contour and crevice on the bottom. The stick is plenty strong enough to set the hook on any fish with confidence. The only downside of this rod are the guides, not the strongest, but at $170 price point, one of the best rods on the market (in my opinion at least). I like this stick so much that I bought a second identical one.

Now the reel. This year I paired this rod with my Abu Garcia Revo Winch Gen 3. Something about this combo just feels right. The reel is one of the lightest on the market, and solid! Love this reel.

Personally, this rod and reel combo makes for very comfortable jigging, and really dials you in to every pick up and strike. It was my main set up early in Jamaica bay, on our local ocean drops outside of Breezy, on the reefs and even was super effective on my deep drop trips with Lep in 80 feet of water.

This rod / reel combo helped me put a good number of 6's, a few 7's, a 9, and a 10+ Doormat in the boat this year. I liked it so much that I never used many of my go to, way more expensive, custom rods this year. Go figure. Guess you can safely say that this is my new favorite setup.

I just pulled the trigger on the jigging world nexus heavy. Seems pretty nice. And the price is good. I. Thinking I'm gonna put my gen 4 revo winch on it. Should perform well with buck tails from 1-4 oz.

Correction... Lep’s deep drops... that was a typo.... lol.. Sorry Pete! Just realized it said that after I posted. Frank

Hi Lep,

Didn't know you are here now. Neil pointed me in the right direction. Happy New Year to all.

I have an arsenal of fluke rods from shallow water in Shinnecock and Moriches to deepwater set ups for Montauk and Block Island.

For shallow water my favorite is a CTS ES663 matched with a Curado 200E5. For Montauk and the deepwater spots for years it was a DNY Impact matched with a Calcutta 250. However, for the last two years I have been using both the Blackhole Challenger 701L and the Jigging World Black Widow 150 matched with either a Lexa 300 PWR or a Tranx 300.

Al G.

Hi Al, welcome aboard! So tell us more about the BH Challenger L. How heavy a bucktail can it bounce before it becomes ineffective? And have you had any experience with the Challenger UL yet?

Your input is always very much appreciated!

The BH701L I have used with leadheads up to 4 ozs. for jigging fluke and sinkers up to 8 oz. fishing for sea bass. I did a few night eeling trips drifting off Montauk Light and had fish to 40 lbs. I tried it jigging for tog at some East End shallow water spots and it was a blast.

No experience with the UL.
