Interesting tog bait comparison video
On my boat, and I presume many others, we always save the legs cut off the crabs during prep time and use them to "chum". While I don't think it is as effective as say sending down a frozen log of the target species desired food, it does seem to help to a certain extent.I feel like just building the bite will suffice. Once they see the commotion they will swim over.
A great looking cooler of fresh fish!!Sunday Blackfishing 10/26
Ran over to one of my local reefs with Robbie P. for a really nice day of combo-catching. Got right on my "latest preferred bottom" right around 7:15 - turned out that I didn't have to lift the anchor the rest of the trip. One stop shopping, with some up and back anchor line adjustments to keep us over fresh bottom. Started off with a really fat 20" biscuit, with three more biggies to follow during the day, all in the 19-20" class. Fat, beautiful to look at, and will be tasty as well. Then one truly monstrous porgy - Rob said the biggest he's ever seen.
As for the tog, constant action, we sorted thru what had to be 70 pieces this trip, with 5 making it into the box. Not sea monsters, but fat 17+'s, which are probably the best eating size anyway. If we were comm fishing we were pretty sure we came close to a limit - with many, many in the 15-16" class. Kills me to throw a 15.75" fish back, but it is what it is. Really a nice day on the water, and with most of the yahoos chasing the currently elusive bass, there was not a ton of competition on the reef.
As for the boat's exhaust manifold gasket leak - didn't seem to get any worse during this trip, so I'm gonna keep running it as long as I see no further worsening of the issue. Hopefully I can nurse her thru the balance of the season. Git 'er done in the Spring.
