Week Two of My Alleged 2019 Fluke Season

Sailed solo again, hit all the usual sand drops for a few shorts - but better ones this week. ☹

The good news is that the big Winter dogs appear to have vamoosed - which does seem to indicate the water is coming up to temp. I wasn't sticking with the sand all morning, and so ran to some hard bottom, broke out the CBass/Ling rigs and put a 15-pc hurt on the ding-a-lings. Plenty of CBass around too, a shame we can't keep 'em. Speaking of which I heard at my dock that once again Jersey has a Spring CBass season and we do not. WTF?

Anyway, its funny that I got three nice fat 18.5" short fluke on the ling rigs. Changed back to Fluke jigging rigs - and nothin'. Some days are like that. . .

So having all the fish I cared to fillet, I sailed home before 12:00 on a lovely ocean. Really a nice peaceful day's fishing, regardless of the lack of my targeted species.

I caught exactly TWO keeper fluke this spring so far! One was a fish nearing 6 lbs. and the other was about 20." Now, that being said, I've only been out fluke fishing twice thanks to the fantastic weather we've had. Water was as high as 56 degrees when I fished. I think the warmer water should bring more fish...I hope.

PICS? We'll see.

Hallelujah! An actual keeper!

Kudos! Better than I'm doing - so far. . .

Oh boy, once it gets going are they gonna pay dearly for dissing me . . . talk about motivation!

There will be much gnashing of fluke teeth, this I can assure you.

Did ok this weekend. Got a couple keepers 20" & 21" Saturday. Tons of Cbass around, a few nice ones too! Caught a few short fluke also.

Lots of cocktails out there, starting to push the schoolies out.

Yesterday tried to avoid the fleet. I was fishing on the outskirts of the fleet with a friend in his boat. (both on our own boats)He caught a nice fluke and the fleet came closer.

They came so close one got a front row seat to watch me land a nice 5.7 pond flattie. :) This fish fought like an eight pounder. Lots of deep dives with violent headshakes. A blast on light gear!

That makes my third over five pounds, according to my log looks like I'm right on schedule. (y)

Excellent! Come bring your mojo to the mid-South Shore please! We’re starvin’ down here!

Despite the greatly exaggerated reports posted in some publications, the spring Fluke fishery on the North Fork is still a struggle on most days. While it is true that the handful of keepers landed are nice size, the overall number of fish, including shorts is way down compared to previous years. Still, those who preserve do occasionally come up with a few quality fish.

Last Friday I ran a half day trip on the Orient Star for a group of senior citizens with tons of birds, the proverbial "heartbreak" out of season Sea Bass and one nice 7# Fluke for George as seen here.

Today, following another half day trip on the Star, I went out on my own boat in the afternoon and finally found a small patch of keepers near Bug Light. In just under 2 hours I managed to put 4 nice thick Fluke in the 3.5-4.5# class in the box, once the wind and tide finally decided to cooperate. Maybe there is still hope to salvage some good spring action on the North Fork.

It looks like it could just have been a late season. I sure hope so. Here's a shot of some squid moving in and there are reports of them them inshore on sandeels.

Hit the open bottom off JI this morning - right off the bat - a fat 7lb0oz fish for me, on my new Black Hole Charter Special Slow Pitch rod, a very nice piece, btw. Thought it was gonna be a fluke slamfest, but only pulled one more 4lb fish, while dropping another bruiser half way up - a real heart breaker as it felt at least as large as the prior biggie. Picked away at some whiting and assorted other "bottomy critters," both edible and not, but not much more in the fluke department after the turn.

Ran further off to some hard stuff, hoping for a repeat of last season's first trip out there, but no dice, you just couldn't get thru the ling. The fluke may well be there, hard to tell when your pricey GULP! baits are instantly molested by the slimy ones. So no dice on the hard bottom flat ones today - not for lack of trying though.

Shot back to the open bottom, and my good buddy Brian pulls a fat 3lb fish, but that was it on the fluke. So we finished up with a 3/4/7lb fish, at least a dozen ling, four whiting and a fat biscuit. And so it goes . . .

Oh, forgot to mention - both my keepers came on the fabled "Salmon" 6" grubs. Hey, after all the B.S. and hype, they DO actually work, after all!

Hello! Weekend wrap up. Saturday Fluking we had my son David and grandson Mick in from CA along with Glen and Paul. We grinded on the fluke not great for us the shorts were relentless the guys scraped up 4 for the cooler. Today Rob and son Shayne came down. We put a limit of CBass in the cooler along with a mess of ling and some whiting and couple of blues. We then sought out the fluke- again the shorties were present but we managed to nab an 7.8# fat one. The boys went home with a lot of meat. Thanks guys, until next time Adios and keep em tight.

Nice fish Rick! Here off JI grinding it out is the key right now. Some good ones out there for those with patience!
