If there is enough light to capture an image it will work off the standard mode. If not it switches into night vision.

You're both correct. If there's a "Auto" setting for Night Vision, it won't kick in until it's dark out. A porch light may be bright enough to prevent Night Vision from kicking in.

It will limit what you can see to the porch only. With night vision you may catch critters just off the porch... Put the porch light on a timer and have the camera set to use night vision when the light goes off.

It might be an default setting. Simple test, have it on and watch it after dark with the porch light on and then turn the light off and see if it's working...
