Safety certification

Regardless of the laws and what we need to do as boater’s, someone lost a child over carelessness. Mocking the law and making unnecessary statements aren’t gonna change New York State’s way nor will it bring back an innocent child. I’m sure most avid boaters and fishermen will do what they need to do in order to enjoy there passion for the outdoors.

You're making my point.

Obviously were stuck with the law and the enforcement hammer. None of it is actually going to make boating safer. But it destroys freedom like eating an elephant. One bite at a time.

Most avids would have done those things from want and not need. They're not the problem. The wantonly ignorant will continue to be wantonly ignorant.

Any actual evidence to prove a safety class really makes a difference?

Only law enforcement will hold people responsible and maybe operate with more competence.

Your papers please!

If you've done nothing wrong, you have nothing to hide. 'ts all good comrade! 🙁

Please feel free to further explain the acronym High Explosive. After holding TS for 30 years and countless random urinalysis exams I never did the druggie thing. So what else is HE?

Pequa: I teach the NY State Boating Safety Class. As long as you have the certificate you are OK. I have had parents
who took the class years ago and still had there certificate from the 1970's and 80's, As far as records for the NY State class. NY State has records in Albany going back toabout the year 2000. Records before that they may or may not have. The records building had a flood and many earlier records were distroyed.
If it was a Power Squadron or USCGA class. you would have to contact them to see if thier records go back that far

I called the Power Squadron, and they had no record of my certificate. Luckily, I found it. They told me if I scanned it and sent it to them, they would add it to their records. Just in case I cannot find it in the future.

I also printed a copy of the scan and keep it on the boat as proof.

Did the course and test yesterday online through Boat US. About six hours of boredom. The pages are timed and you cannot go on until 24 seconds has passed. The final exam was easy. There are 50 questions of general knowledge and 10 questions New York specific. I wound up getting two cards for $15 and I planned on leaving them in my two boats. Looking back, I should have had the endorsement on my DL.

It asks you to Enter your New York Safe Boating Certificate number. What if you took the Power Squadron course and passed. I have been told that that is sufficient to meet the requirements.
A friend had taken the Boater Safety Course course in 2017. He was able to add the designation onto his DL.

Thanks! Good to know. But I rather not go to DMV.

So when it aksed for his certification number do you happen to know what he entered?
If you took a Boaters Safety Course you get a certificate number. Use that number. Poorrichard has a link. In that link is another link. That link seems to be the link to get your license via email.

How do ya get the endorsement on your drivers license
although I haven't been pulled over for a ticket since 1976, I do not want anyone to see any indication of boating, hunting, bowhunting, or fishing on my drivers license. If the topic comes up in conversation, fine. I have pix of all on my Iphone, and when I am engaged in one of those activities I do not mind sticking a card into my wallet. Too much readily availble info is just not what I want "out there." got rid of my NRA sticker years ago.

Looks like to get the endorsement requires an appearance at the DMV, which is the same as a sharp stick in the eye, high on my list of things to avoid.

Over the last couple of years, I have to admit the DMV has become the friendliest face of government there is.

They have become a relative pleasure to deal with. Maybe my opinion is colored by dealing with them in the '70s when they were a typical bureaucratic monolith and a trip into the bowels of hell to do the most ordinary thing.

I remember the counters were four feet high and four feet deep and if they were honest, they'd admit that was to keep the clientele from being able to reach their throats on the first lunge. When you're building infrastructure based on that idea, something's wrong.

Someone apparently got the memo, and after one of my recent visits I suggested they send someone over to the court system to teach them how to treat the jury pool.
