Safety certification

On January 1st, we already have a candidate for the worst comment of the year

I thought you pot-smokin', left wing, extra liberal hippie guys were all "question authority" and "Don't trust anyone over thirty."

Now freedom can be destroyed and government authority must be expanded if the cause is sympathetic?

Did all that civil rights ideology vanish in a puff of THC vape?

I'm very disappointed, but probably not surprised.

Whatever. I think after Brianna was murdered by an ass in a bigger boat off Fire Island that laws pased in the interest of safety would be a good thing. I guess not. And after carrying a TS and subject to random urinalysis for 30 years I am pretty far from a leftwing pot smoker lol.

H-E-vertical straight thing symbolic of a lower case L, vertical straight thing symbolic of a lower case L.

C'mon. You're older than I am. You've heard it before. :D
Not a clue. But as a field artillery officer i can only visualize High Explosive for the HE acronym.
But back on topic, Brianna’s Law is quite similar to why we have road tests and drivers licenses for automobiles.

As far as the Captains license question. As long as the license is current/valid you are fine

I have gotten this question a lot over the years. Some have expired licenses and dont understand why they arent
accepted as proof of boaters training. Just trying to be as clear as possible

FWIW: I am a licensed captain as well

But what of decades old boating safety certificates? I have taken three, the absolute best was with the USCGA but that was in the 70s !

Thats quite a ridiculous and inaccurate assumption to make about me
All I did was imply its weird to make a statement about a law about a kid that got tragically killed

Pequa: I teach the NY State Boating Safety Class. As long as you have the certificate you are OK. I have had parents
who took the class years ago and still had there certificate from the 1970's and 80's, As far as records for the NY State class. NY State has records in Albany going back toabout the year 2000. Records before that they may or may not have. The records building had a flood and many earlier records were distroyed.
If it was a Power Squadron or USCGA class. you would have to contact them to see if thier records go back that far.

My last course would be on record (post 2000) but I am unconcerned as I have no desire to own another boat with a motor. Once you yak you don’t go back, lol. Sort of dumb that the state would accept my first course certificate that i got in 1978

Would you need to have the actual license on you or would a picture of the valid license suffice? If you’re not chartering and fishing with friends it could give off the wrong impression.

Pavement on the road to H E double toothpicks.
Regardless of the laws and what we need to do as boater’s, someone lost a child over carelessness. Mocking the law and making unnecessary statements aren’t gonna change New York State’s way nor will it bring back an innocent child. I’m sure most avid boaters and fishermen will do what they need to do in order to enjoy there passion for the outdoors.

Pretty sure if you have a photo on your phone that will be accepted.
I keep photos of my MMC's on my phone and have to have them avaialble while at work

I also have a photo of my Safe Boating Certificate on my phone as well.

Thinking about all the avoidable accidents I've witnessed on the water (Including a Fountain CC going from 50-0 after cutting off a channel marker on the wrong side. Serious injuries)
safety anything is good.

In fact, I wish DMV would make defensive driving course mandatory every 10 years!

Post about pot smokers didn't refer to you. But I'd still think you'd understand the concept about ineffective feel-good regulations

"The road to hell is paved with good intentions."

C'mon. It's gotta be a hundred years old.

And, you clearly didn't read my original post about how driver's licenses haven't made people competent.

Only law enforcement will hold people responsible and maybe operate with more competence. Please feel free to further explain the acronym High Explosive. After holding TS for 30 years and countless random urinalysis exams I never did the druggie thing. So what else is HE?

Unfortunately, in our "prohibited" political debates, when you present your persona on the internet you get saddled with the mantle of a particular side of the argument. You present as a '60s throwback, dead-head and very left-leaning.

I have this weird libertarian ideal that everybody is an individual and I'd like to believe your views are informed by your own beliefs and experiences. But on the innerneck I only have what I see to work from.

My point was about how you present as a '60s civil rights type, but seem happy to have those rights eroded by the authority that such people would have demonized in that era.

I apologize if I painted you with that brush unfairly. In general I find people on the left side of politics to be very kind, good-hearted and compassionate people. That's not a bad thing, until they let their good nature be abused by people who lack perspective and self control.
