It's the GRPJS66MH paired with a Shimano Sustain C5000 loaded with 50LB. Hi Vis yellow Power Pro Maxcuatro. I do not know if you do a lot of tog jigging. But many times you will not feel the tog pick up your jig. Rather the line actually just moves side ways and the yellow color helps my tired old eyes see this movement better.

Pulled on a GRPJS70ML last week. Pretty much the same action as a trevala. Matter of fact pretty dead on to the tvs70ml. Just nicer hardware. My humble opinion, save the $

I’m looking hard at the new Shimano Grappler Type LJ spinner in the 180gram power as my next “Hands-on Tackle Review” subject. The blank technology in this new series is exceptional, particularly given Shimano’s list price - which I think is very fair. But first I need to finish the season-long eval of the Black Hole Challenger Bank 691UL.

Here's the tech, vaguely similar to what UC has been doing, except Shimano was building JDM-only rods like this for about 25 years, and is a MAJOR player in the industry, offering warranty protection not many can match:

Nope. Not like Shimano - as I’ve previously told you, they’ve been doing it for a VERY long time. Shimano utilizes several different spiral-wrap technologies and combines them in one blank. They are alone in producing such innovation. All patented, by the way.

The others you mention at best do a double helix. No comparison - Shimano went way past that type of blank manufacture a long time ago. And I’m not sure CTS does it at all. I'll look into it further soon.

Its like you just can’t help yourself. Its close to a “cat and laser dot” reaction. Pretty much every single time.

Millions use and enjoy Shimano products, including me. Is everything Shimano produces the best of the best? No, of course not. Every tackle company has had a few clunkers in their line, past or present.

But no matter what we discuss here, if Shimano rods come up, you will post negative. Did someone from Shimano swipe a girlfriend from you in High School? ?

Can you give us ONE example of something Shimano makes that you think is a quality product?

Shitmano spits out low end fishing gear year after year I have had more of their reels blow up on me right out of the box than any other .in fact their the only one,,BIG does not make you good...they post a video of how their doing something new ..LOL sounds like some other NEW BS that's was posted a couple of years back..they just want to suck you in & suck out your money..

Repeatedly? Right out of the box? Sorry, not believable.

Look, this board's intention is the polite discussion of new and/or otherwise interesting tackle and techniques.

It is not a place for the unendingly repetitive slamming of products with which your business has a direct conflict of interest.

We get it, you want to sell your custom rods. Customs have their place, and are great for those that want and can afford them. In fact the majority of my own favorite sticks are custom built. However, many modern factory rods are getting much closer to custom-level fit and finish - and this is a fact that some just cannot accept.

I've told you this more than once - no one successfully sells by endlessly bad-mouthing their competition. Negative selling NEVER works, not in the long term. Take it from a life-long professional salesman - one that's learned this lesson the hard way, over 45 years of direct "street selling."

Here on this site we have given you a golden opportunity to highlight your creations, which in all honesty are very nice indeed, and I always look forward to hearing positive info from you. But this irrational Shimano hate you spew - it stops now, at least on THIS board. Not helpful to anyone, especially you. It just makes you look small . . . with a conflict of interest axe to grind to boot. Not a good look at all.

Maybe this board is just not for you. (Hint, hint).

just so you know that seeker Hurk inshore Iite I built eddie aka you,,,isnt a hurk its a blue lighting ..He sold them as hurks before hurks were rolled...so when you review S glass and hurk's blanks and say how great they are ..If your'e base is that rod its really E glass not "S" and a blue lighting not a hurk..and I was not told to years later so I also thought it was...

Hey Guys, been a long time since I came on NYA to chat...Hope everyone is doing well.

I know I'm VERY LATE to this thread (topic) That's probably because I'm not quite the tackle (gear) enthusiast that I used to be (for a myriad of reasons). However, I recently picked up one of these Shimano Grappler Type J rods (the 66MH version) at one of our local shops and I was immediately impressed. I had not seen one before, I had not heard of them before...LOVED the feel of the rod. My initial calculation (as it always is) was can I go toe-to-toe with BIG TOG using this rod. It's not about fluke, or porgies, or blue demons or bass...ALWAYS TOG!

The first thing I noticed was, the action suited me. Traditionally, I fish faster action rods. That's just me. Especially where tog are concerned. Next, I noticed the longer foregrip (BIG consideration for my tog rods). Again, very impressed. The quality Fuji guides (I believe there were 8, not including the tip) also put a smile on my face. At this point I started wishing I had brought my Abu 40 Beast to the shop with me to throw on this thing and get a serious idea how much damage I could do with it. Overall, my initial assessment of the rod was - I WANT ONE! However, my "inner Eddie" the more pragmatic Eddie, talked the impulsive Eddie out of it...Temporarily.

I wanted to do a little bit of research on the rod to see what the construction value was because I'm always concerned with my tog rods blowing up due to my violent hook sets. I've been known to put a few rods out of commission. Some of them being very expensive and carefully thought-out rods. NOTHING hurts more than busting a custom-built rod you put months into designing and building. It puts a serious damper on a fishing trip, that I can personally attest to. .

When I came here to this thread and saw that video detailing the construction of the blank (thanks to Lep for posting) my mind was put at east that this Grappler rod from Shimano can handle the task of catching BIG tog with serious force being used to set the hook. Trust me, I play that day my rod went poof in my hands over and over again JUST BEFORE I set the hook on a good tog "thump" and I honestly believe it has hurt my success ratio. Not kidding.

So, I will be visiting John at Trophy to make that purchase in the coming weeks. Before I do that, I need to figure out which rods in my current arsenal will be sacrificed to finance the new Grappler. I have many to consider and you guys should keep an eye out in Lep's Flea Market thread for some BEAUTIFUL MINT CONDITION CUSTOM BUILT RODS going up for sale!

Guys, no one on Earth (at least that I've met) takes better care of his tackle, or puts more thought into his custom rods than Eddy/Savvy18. If he ever puts ANY of his rods up for sale and you might be in the market for an as-new, MINT stick, you owe it to yourself to have a look-see at his pieces. I personally maintain his reels - and believe me, they are in far better shape than any of mine - and that's saying something.

Eddy - thank you for steering the discussion back on track, and away from the troll. Haven't heard from you in a while. Hit me up some time.

I stopped my Trophy today to get a new Accurist spooled up with some 15lb Berkley x 9. Took a look at the Grappler they had some spinning and conventional saw some 6' and 6'6" there. They felt really nice and appeared to be very well made. Will look further into them over the winter like to see a 7' jigging blank.
