the "Headline That Caught My Attention or the WTF" thread

North Korean defector Yeonmi Park says she failed to call for help while being robbed in Chicago last year as bystanders barred her because it would be “racist.”

What happened:
Park, 27, recalled the incident in a new interview with podcaster Joe Rogan, which tackled her experiences as a child in North Korea and as a defector in the U.S. She said it occurred during lootings across the city last summer.

  • Park was out with her baby and a nanny when three Black women allegedly robbed her near Saks Fifth Avenue on Michigan Avenue. The suspects tried to flee but she managed to grab the woman who took her wallet.
  • Park held onto the woman and attempted to call the police. At this point, the woman allegedly started accusing her of racism and punching her in the chest. “You’re a racist! The color of my skin doesn’t make me a thief,” she recalled the woman as saying.
  • The situation became more difficult for Park as bystanders -- whom she identified as white people -- gathered around the scene and allegedly prevented her from phoning law enforcement. She said they also let the suspects go.
  • “These people on the streets, these bystanders, who were white people, were calling me racist,” Park alleged. “They were telling me that the color of their [the robbers'] skin doesn’t make them thieves.”
  • Park said she also saw one white mother point at her to illustrate racism in the U.S. to her teenage children. “Look at that racist, that’s the problem we have,” she recalled the mother as saying.
The aftermath: Park said the incident marked the beginning of her “speaking out” and becoming "the enemy of the woke.” When the group of some 20 bystanders blocked her from calling the police, she thought to herself, “This country lost it.”

  • The 27-year-old stressed that if the same thing had occurred in North Korea, bystanders would have naturally helped the victim. “They’re not going to just, out of nowhere, scream ‘You’re a racist!’” she said.
  • Park said police were able to find a suspect after reviewing surveillance footage and tracking her credit cards. A report from CWB Chicago shows that Lecretia Harris, 29, was arrested in connection with the incident and initially charged with felony robbery.
  • Harris reportedly pleaded guilty to a charge of unlawful restraint in exchange for a two-year sentence. Prosecutors dropped the robbery charge as part of the plea agreement.

In most states, individuals have to prove they’re out of work through no fault of their own to collect unemployment benefits.

“This often means that they are let go due to a lack of work,” said Alana Ackels, a labor and employment lawyer at Bell Nunnally, a Dallas-based law firm.

“Typically, an employee who is terminated for failing to comply with company policies is not eligible for unemployment benefits, which would include refusing to comply with a company’s COVID-19 prevention policies, masking requirements or vaccine requirements,” Ackels told MarketWatch.

But an employee who has proof of a medical exemption or religious objection to receiving a COVID-19 vaccine may still be eligible to collect unemployment benefits if fired, said Rebecca Dixon, executive director at the National Employment Law Project, a nonprofit that advocates for worker’s rights.

Otherwise, refusing to get a COVID-19 vaccine, if your employer requires one, “is akin to an employee’s refusal to submit to permissible drug tests or participate in safety trainings,” said Ronald Zambrano, employment law chair at West Coast Trial Lawyers, a Los Angeles–based law firm.

A woman fishing last week on the Fraser River outside of Vancouver, Canada, hooked a 9-foot sturgeon whose mighty leap was caught on video.

Perhaps as remarkable was that Zdebiak’s husband, Rob, hooked a different sturgeon of similar size at the same time so two epic fights involving prehistoric-looking “river monsters” occurred simultaneously.

"All heck broke loose,” Bisson, owner of Yves Bisson Sturgeon Co., said. “It was crazy that we hooked two at once that size and landed them. Both were over 300 pounds and one was over 8 feet, and the other over 9 feet.”

Only Steevie jumped in to pose with the sturgeon before they were unhooked and allowed to swim free. (White sturgeon cannot be harvested on the Lower Fraser River).

White sturgeon can measure 12-plus feet and weigh more than 1,000 pounds. The fish date to prehistoric times and have been described as “living dinosaurs.”

hell of a catch & the odds of getting two of them the same trip?

One of the writers of “I Am Legend” is weighing in on vaccine hesitancy, and he wants to make one thing very clear: the virus he used as the catalyst to the 2007 post-apocalyptic film is not a real thing. And he certainly doesn’t want people passing up the COVID-19 vaccine because of it.

For those who are unfamiliar, “I Am Legend” followed Will Smith’s character, who is the last human in New York. The rest of the population was wiped out by a genetically re-engineered measles virus, which was created as a cure for cancer. It took roughly three years to infect just about everybody, turning them into literal monsters.

Apparently, some people in the real world have been afraid that the COVID vaccines could result in a similar situation — and Akiva Goldsman, a co-writer and executive producer of “I Am Legend,” is baffled by it. After seeing a screenshot from a New York Times article that cited one woman’s concern about the vaccine resulting in an “I Am Legend”-type disaster, Goldsman tweeted, “Oh. My. God. It’s a movie. I made that up. It’s. Not. Real.”

KINGSTON, N.H. (AP) — A man has pleaded guilty to a disorderly conduct charge stemming from an explosive gender reveal party that was heard by nearby residents in New Hampshire and Massachusetts.

As part of a plea deal reached Tuesday, Anthony Spinelli, of Kingston, was convicted and fined $620, of which $500 will be suspended for 12 months as long as he stays out out of trouble, according to court records.

Police in Kingston, a town not far from the Massachusetts state line, received reports in April of a loud explosion. They responded to a quarry, where people acknowledged holding a gender reveal party with explosives.

The explosive was 80 pounds (36 kilograms) of Tannerite, police said. The family thought the quarry would be the safest spot to detonate the explosive, which is typically sold over the counter as a target for firearms practice, police said.

Some nearby residents reported their homes were shaken by the explosion. No injuries were reported, police said.

“Based on the facts, at the conclusion of the investigation, we feel that the charge and the disposition were appropriate,” Kingston police said in a statement. “We are very thankful no one was injured during the gender reveal incident and sympathetic to the fact it startled the community.”

It wasn’t immediately known if Spinelli had a lawyer to speak for him. A message sent to him on social media seeking comment was not immediately returned.

  • Billy Crystal said he ate too many edibles before an MRI because he was "very nervous."
  • Thirty minutes into the procedure, he was so stoned he asked the doctor if he could get Taco Bell.
  • He also told the doctor he wouldn't mind getting some "gumbo or Nutella french toast" delivered.

:ROFLMAO:

Heard a “ Headline” that we defeated the organization that attacked us on 911 but then just recently gave them back control of a entire country. Which will make this Country strong enough to come back and do worse resulting in loosing even more young and old lives to their cause.
