The Onancock Chronicles the Eastern shore

Friendliest place I've ever been to,drive down the road the guy mowing his lawn stops in his tracks just to wave hello, sit a bench in town and every car or mostly pickups wave to you, maybe they just know I used to be a farmer..lol

I was gonna say something similar.

I had a woman walking two dogs past my house one morning as I sat on the front porch finishing my coffee. I said good morning & complemented her animals (Russian Wolfhounds). She came right up the walk - sat down next to me & began a 20 minute conversation.

And then there was the "Turkey Whisperer".
You ask them how they're doing in passing - like you do up in NY - & don't be surprised if they actually tell you whether you wanna know or not.

Just don't ask 'em where the fishing spots are. They won't tell.

Same for me too. Just a laid back, very friendly place. My wife and I were down over labor day weekend. We had our two dogs, a lab and a dopey mutt, with us. We sat down on a bench by the kayak launch and a woman walking by just walked over, pet the dogs and we had a very nice conversation. Here people power walk by avoiding eye contact.
I've experienced the driving wave to the point where I do it all the time now. I had a friend down in July. I waved at a pick-up going by. He's like, "you know that guy ?? " . I said no, we all just smile and wave at each other here. :)

Just don't ask 'em where the fishing spots are. They won't tell.

I don't tell either ...... I get that.

I am really good at observing ! 8-)

Last time down I was told the locals call people like me, wader, macks and sandspinner the "Come heres".

We have 3 classes...

Maineahs: Folks whose families have been here at least 4 generations.

PFAs (People From Away): Any one who doesn't fit the above or below categories

And last, but not least, my favorite, Massholes: no need to define that one...

could Amazon be coming to the Shore?

AMAZON REPRESENTATIVE TOURS THE EASTERN SHORE Sep 28, 2019

An official from Amazon spent all day Thursday touring the Eastern Shore of Virginia.

Ardine Williams, Amazon’s Vice President of Workforce Development, spent the full day on a tour of Accomack and Northampton Counties set up by the Eastern Shore of Virginia Chamber of Commerce.

Her day began with a tour of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel with CEO Jeff Holland, followed by a tour of Northampton County with County Administrator Charlie Kolakowski. Williams, Kolakowski, and Eastern Shore of Virginia Chamber of Commerce and Eastern Shore of Virginia Tourism Commission Executive Director Robie Marsh toured Cape Charles, Cheriton, Eastville, the former Shore Memorial Hospital in Nassawadox and areas around Exmore, including Willis Wharf to show aquaculture.

Upon reaching Accomack County, Williams and Marsh were joined by County Administrator Mike Mason, Zoning Director Rich Morrison, Senator Lynwood Lewis, Delegate Rob Bloxom and Eastern Shore Broadband Authority Executive Director Robert Bridgham.

In Accomack, Williams was shown the Industrial Park, the Eastern Shore Community College, the Airport, Onley, Onancock and the future site of the Eastern Shore Public Library and Heritage Center in Parksley.

Following the tour of Parksley, Williams was treated to a tour of the NASA Wallops Flight Facility by Jeremy Eggers and Dale Nash, CEO of Virginia Space.

Next was a tour of Chincoteague Island, followed by a tour of the solar farm in northern Accomack County, which Amazon originally built before selling to Old Dominion Electric Cooperative.
(I pass by there regularly on my way up to Lowes in Maryland - never knew Amazon built it - it's huge)

According to Marsh, the ‘fam(short for familiarization) tour’ with Williams spent more time off 13 than on. Williams asked a lot of questions about the Community College and their CDL program, the abandoned hospital building and the Wallops Flight Facility.

The tour was the result of a suggestion by Governor Ralph Northam following the Amazon deal for their ‘H2Q’ in northern Virginia. Northam urged Amazon officials to tour southwestern Virginia, the Suffolk area, and the Eastern Shore of Virginia to see if any future projects could be located in either of these areas.

Williams promised this would not be her last visit to the Eastern Shore.

don’t know if that a good thing or a bad thing for that area

I

don’t know if that a good thing or a bad thing for that area

what we lack out here is jobs.....................

Being a mostly Agricultural Based Economy - the only other employment is Walmart, two Chicken Processing Plants (Tyson & Perdue) or fast food joints. There's nothing to hold young folk here. So they leave.

Was recently at one of my Planning Meetings where it was brought up that the average age in Onancock is 62 & getting older based on census data. This would provide much needed jobs & probably be a boost to the economy & property values. Would help the tax base as well.

The only people moving into the area are well heeled individuals who are looking for a second home or retirees or near retirees like myself, Capt13 or Mack.

There's plenty of land to build on.

I think it would be a good thing...........

I'm confused. Wasn't the small town feel, open spaces, and reasonable real estate property prices accompanied by low property taxes, a major part of the allure that attracted you, Macks and Capt 13 to the Eastern Shore? Now you're embracing the potential influx of economic powers that would threaten that charm??

Sounds like you're envisioning "LI Suburbia South" and are forgetting many of the reasons you left LI. Personally I'd go alinear if I heard that a Bevy of Bezos Bozos were touring Midcoast Maine.

Be careful of what you wish for...

The ES is something like 80 miles long & 10 miles wide with only 48,000 people living on it - there's plenty of room for an Amazon distribution center that will provide a bit of an economic boon without infringing on anything the Shore represents Dom.

Im gonna venture a guess here young kids arent leaving because of no jobs maybe its something else?

From what I saw so far trades people are doing great, carpenters, plumbers, flooring companies, small auto repair shops all are killing it,other than that like wader said,oh yea crabbers must be making a good buck to,plenty of poverty all over down there but I think a lot of them are happy to just have a roof over head and a barbecue pit in the back yard ?

We have been down since Thursday afternoon ..... our boys showed up as well, daughter in-law, new grandson, and dogs (4 of 'em). We all had a blast over the weekend. I think more time was spent the dock then anywhere else. I dont have a boat here yet ..... maybe next trip.

We caught enough crabs for a crab in red sauce over spaghetti dinner. The variety of fish in our creek is amazing. Between the 4' cast net and rod and reel we caught small stripers, small blues, speckled trout, white perch, spot, peanut bunker, croakers, 1 weak fish 14", and today I caught a small redfish (my first).
