well while "doing the garden digging the weeds - who could ask for anything more" something "more" happened - I found the old well (I think)....

Was using the flat edged shovel to expand & edge a garden when I sent it down & heard a resounding "clunk" of metal hitting stone. Cleared away some of the soil to find a brick lining about 4" below the soil. Cleared more of the dirt to the left & right of what I hit - more mortized brick,

There's something buried down here!!


Cleared a little more in all directions for about 3 feet & kept finding brick. It was the top of something.
(Started to remind of that Stephen King novel "The Tommyknockers" which kinda made me nervous).

I tapped on it with the shovel - it was hollow underneath.
(Just like in "Tommyknockers")

Took the pitchfork (if you live in the county it is one of two things that you are required to own - the other is a banjo - I'm working on that one) & drove it into the ground in a widening circle. Got a "clunk" over a 5 to 7 foot diameter.
(Just like in "Tommyknockers")

Hollow in all cases when hit with the shovel.

Not wishing to cause some sort of cave in if the brick "roof" fell in (or wake whatever might be interred below the part of my brain still sitting in Tommyknocker Land said) - I put the soil back over the brick & continued weeding all the while casting a nervous eye toward the brick domes location under the soil.

house was built in the 1800's - public water didn't appear until sometime in the 1930/40's (or so I'm told) - so there had to be a well somewhere on the property

There no record as to where it was (a lot of speculation - "Over yonder there somewhere"). I think this might have been it. It's reasonably close to the backdoor (which come to think of it wasn't there in the 1800's).

So I'm guessing well (or Tommyknockers).

I've uncovered many a strange thing on this property - so.........

The Curse of Oak Island - a show that took Opening Al Capone's Vault's 2 hour format and has been dragging it out for years!! I watched like 3 episodes and figured if they actually ever found something, it would be in the news months before the sequence of shows that will drag it out over an entire season...

I watch it because I’m committed from a time standpoint lol. I too read the article in National Geographic back in grammar school and was taken by the story. I think most of it is long gone and whatever is left was dropped by the original finders. My problem with the whole thing is most of what they are finding could easily be from all the searchers over the years. Part of me thinks that the old man and his son planted a lot of this stuff so they had something to eventually sell and make some money off.
