A business owner tested if customers would pay more for American-made. The results were 'sobering.'

  • Afina founder Ramon van Meer wanted to see if people would buy a Made-in-USA version of his specialty shower head.
  • He found it would cost three times as much to produce — and raised the sale price by 85%.
  • After several days of testing, a total of zero customers bought the USA model.
As a small business owner, Ramon van Meer said he's used to hearing people say they'd be willing to pay more for products made in America.

When President Donald Trump ratcheted up tariffs on Chinese imports by an additional 145%, van Meer decided to see if shoppers would put their money where their mouth is.

"I wanted to know the answer and then use it for my own company," the Afina founder told Business Insider.

So the serial entrepreneur set about finding US suppliers to make his best-selling product: a specialized filtered shower head.

Van Meer said his filters are made in the US, some additional materials are sourced in Vietnam, and the final product is made in China with a single supplier.

To move everything over to the US, he said he had to find four to six separate suppliers who would handle various aspects of the production process. All told, he found it would cost three times as much to produce — more than the cost of simply paying the tariff.

Armed with real numbers, he set out to do a test with two identical products, with the only difference being their origin and, critically, their price: visitors to Afina's website were presented with the option of a Chinese-made item for $129 or a US-made version for $239.

"I'm big on just testing it out with real data and real purchases," van Meer said. "Not asking customers, not a survey, not even add-to-carts."

"When somebody has to pay for it, that's the actual real data," he added.

After several days and more than 25,000 visitors, he said he sold 584 of the lower-priced shower heads and not one single purchase of a US-made version.

A table from Afina's test, showing 0 purchases for the more expensive Made-in-USA version of its shower head.

In a blog post that went viral, van Meer called the results "sobering."

"We wanted to believe customers would back American labor with their dollars. But when faced with a real decision — not a survey or a comment section — they didn't," he wrote.

Nowadays van Meer said he's spending most of his time trying to shift production out of China to a country with a lower tariff rate.

"Staying in China is not sustainable because even if they make a deal, we don't know what's going to happen," he said. "The United States is also not an option, because there's just no facilities that can make it."

So is this article outdated already based on the article posted by @cany ?

Do you feel better about yourself being so negative in life?

It will all work put for the better. Maybe not for you. Well, obviously not.

Holy Shit another example how logical decisions and not compassionate ones are made by only one side. Need to cancel the other side going forward. Trump recently brought back in view that you need to speak and read English to have a CDL and what we have here is more liberal bs. The law had been there and libs don’t follow it.

I can’t even get on a fucking plane right now due to the lax bullshit libs have created until I get a new enhanced license. Was told by DOD I need it to get back on base if I visit. Well WTF! I have a FBI check every few years, a mandated physical every year but can’t take a domestic flight because of shit like what we have here. Literally got a new license endorsement in person last year with no enhancement. Fuck You NY and Fuck You Waders of the US. This is your fault. Now I have to drive 1300 miles to see grandkid and son before next months deployment in a god damn motel off the base while Ivan’s drive around killing people with a CDL they not supposed to have.
Eh, it was the Republicans & W who started the REAL-ID train...

The REAL ID Act of 2005 was introduced by Representative Jim Sensenbrenner (R-WI). The House of Representatives passed the Act as H.R. 418 in February 2005. The law was signed into law by President George W. Bush on May 11, 2005.

Guess Fox News didn't cover it enough and you missed the thousands of emails, including the ones from DOD. I even knew about the DOD part because I fish with a friend whose boat is docked in the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard...

First I heard of it was 5 or 6 yrs back when I had to renew my license

It’s not what it’s for. It’s the point I’ve been there (DMV) three times in three years and I have all sorts of shit you don’t have on regular licenses. Did anyone one mention it to me that it wasn’t enhanced? No. Did anyone ever say I couldn’t get on a domestic flight? No. Only thing ever mentioned was “Rick you don’t have a DOD I.D. you’re gonna need an enhanced license to come back on base”. I don’t know what you guys and Fox bashing is about. I don’t watch Fox or any cable tv channels. However now I need it and the state closed down conveniently two DMV’s and won’t allow walk ins, but it was okay for a half million illegals for months to have lines wrapped around every DMV office for months. That pisses me off, and I have to show the same fucking proof (Birth Certificate, and SS Card) to get it that I have to show every other time I go. The point. Illegals don’t have either so fuck you and the libs for making it come to this for the rest of us. Thank you very much for your time Good Day - Paul Harvey.

The salient point that you don't seem to want to recognize is that the origin of REAL-ID has NOTHING TO DO with me, the libs, nor the current crop of illegals. Every REAL-ID announcement in all media bluntly stated it would be necessary for domestic flights, many government buildings, and military establishments.

Bottom line, you and millions of others, kept ignoring the multiple implementation dates until it was too late. Truly sorry that you're being so inconvenienced in regards to visiting you son and grandchild, but this one is totally on your shoulders, not your normal scapegoats.

Did you see my post on the wreck in Alabama from a Work Visa Russian that spoke no English? To have a CDL the Fed law states you MUST read and write English. Thats the reason for this enhancement. Libs circumvented it so that’s why the inconvenience and all libs are guilty of this. Except it. There are no walk-ins. Try yourself to go on NY dmv and make an appointment, can’t do that either. Must be Trumps fault or Fox News.

Still begs the question why you procrastinated and ended up getting caught with your pants down.
Spin Spin Spin. Did you miss the part when I wrote I have enhancements, holographs, fbi background checks, physicals, it’s a federal not standard regulated license. If the idiots at DMV are not instructed to recommend when you’re standing in front of them that even though it has all this but let’s not mention that you need a star printed on it proving I’m not an illegal in a few months.. Why would I ask? When’s the last finger print and back ground check that you did to obtain or renew your license? Still begs the question why you libs let illegals get licenses to get to this point.

Stunning of what the controversy is about in this song and what isn’t. Brilliant guy, it’s almost like the Born-agains in Fla as a kid canceling the rock concerts for profanity and causing even more attention/concert goers to go. Enjoy.
It’s called HH by the white supremecist Kanye West (He’s Black lol). The libs labeled him as one so now he’ll capitalize off their hate.

Trump might claim China tariff victory – but this is Capitulation Day

Donald Trump will inevitably claim Monday’s temporary truce in the US-China trade war as a victory, but financial markets seem to have read it for what it is – a capitulation.

Stocks were up and bond yields were higher after the US treasury secretary Scott Bessent’s early morning press conference in Geneva, where he has been holding talks with China.

As with the UK “trade deal” last week, the US is not reverting to the status quo before Trump arrived in the White House.

Instead, tariffs on Chinese goods will be cut from 145% to 30% – initially for a 90-day period. In return, China has cut its own tariffs on US imports to 10%, from the 125% it had imposed in retaliation against the White House.

That still marks a big shift in the terms of trade between the two countries since before Trump came to power, but falls far short of what was in effect a trade embargo.

Instead, the statement hailed “the importance of a sustainable, long-term and mutually beneficial economic and trade relationship”. The language was rather different to Trump’s Liberation Day speech, about the US being “looted, pillaged, raped and plundered by nations near and far”.

In other words, the president has caved. He may have been swayed by market wobbles but it seems more plausible that dire warnings from retailers about empty shelves – backed up by data showing shipments into US ports collapsing – may have strengthened the hands of trade moderates in the administration.
