Why I Stopped Watching Wicked Tuna

Saw something like that on a Sunday morning show tarpon fishing in Fla. The fish ran under a section of bridge that the boat couldn't fit under, They tied a life jacket to the rod & tossed it over, ran the boat over to a higher section of the bridge, picked up the life jacket with the rod & continued to fight the fish. Don't think I would send one of my rod & reels for a swim in salt water to land a fish that would end up being released.

Saw TJ on the Hot Tuna do that last week. They had two fish on & were about to get spooled on one rod, TJ tied what looked like a big boat fender on the rod & reel & threw the set up over while they played the second fish, which pulled the hook. They were lucky & were able to track down the swimming fish & land it. I don't know much about those curved but tuna rod & big gold reels other that that's an awful lot of money to take a chance with, & a lot of reel to break down & clean.

Believe it or not, SOP in Tuna Land, ask @Old Mud. When tuna were fetching $20 per pound, that tuna that would dress out at 200+ lbs would make up the rod/reel price...

Years ago when the show was only a few seasons old I was in the Outer Banks fishing. We sailed from the same dock where they film he buying scenes of WT. I asked if the show was legit and referenced the episode where Marciano slammed the boat into the bridge. I thought that scene was totally staged. The reply I got was that the story lines and fishing etc... is real. The part where they buy the tuna is all b.s. and staged.

The price they are told is not what they get...they have to go to auction...that's why they never complain to the dock guy...but they have to do it as an estimate for the dock contest and for viewers...not a big deal

That is absolutely correct, pointed that out in the beginning of this thread. My post was in reference to the days where the tuna did get auction prices of $20+

The last few seasons the "dock price" shown on WT wasn't even close to reality. Most of 2019 the prices that fisherman got in NE was less than $5 per lb, but the WT Chit Show was still showing $18 - $20 per lb. This "false" impression is dangerous and disingenuous. Makes Bozos run out and buy gear to get in on this "Cash Cow", and makes the Greenies scream bloody murder that folks are killing poor tuna to get rich quick.
It's almost as poorly transmitted as the yearly first Japanese Tuna Auction, where the prices go into the tens of thousand a dollar per lb. Everyone get excited by that, BUT it's never explained that buying the first New Year Fish is an important status symbol for Japanese Companies and the competition for this honor causes this crazy price. If you look it up, the second tuna auction prices drops down to the $10 - $20 per lb range.

Kinda like gas pump prices, the price promoted is smoke & mirrors.
:ROFLMAO:

Oops...

Inconceivable that he would fish without the proper licenses. I'd hazard a guess that the IRS and/or the MA Department of Revenue will also investigate...

Well as Forest's Mama says, "Stupid is as stupid does"...
