The Onancock Chronicles the Eastern shore

Hey Wader, on another thread you mentioned there was no way you would kayak due to the US Navy and other large ships plying the Bay. But what about amongst all those islands just off the EASTERN shore (ocean side) of the eastern shore ?
Lots and lots of places to yak on both sides. My favorite paddles on the bayside are Parkers Marsh or going over to Tobacco Island. Not unusual to find an arrowhead at low tide if you walk the small beaches. On seaside you have to be aware of the tide, the current around the inlet and you'll want a little breeze during bug season.

Heading down next week to meet a builder (modular home) to walk our property and discuss the process. Larry I'm taking bagel orders.

just returned from NY - I'm stocked up....................
(y)

thanks of thinking of me

if you end up with some free time give me a call - (sent it via PM) - like to "git an eyeball on y'all" - maybe we could meet for a drink or two..

I'm looking at heading down again Saturday morning.
Larry, we need to set up a day and time to meet for dinner. Last trip was a little rushed.

Assateague Island National Seashore
4 hrs ·
We love Assateague history, and since today is Valentine's Day, we thought we'd share a story about a place on Assateague referred to simply as Valentine’s. Valentine’s is a place and a physical structure, but both are testaments to a part of Assateague’s rich cultural history.

Tucked away on what used to be called Whittington Point, you can find what remains of C. Braxton Valentine, Jr.’s hunting lodge. Valentine, an heir to the Valentine’s Meat Juice Company in Richmond, VA, and four friends bought a total of 170 acres on the bayside of Assateague, 147 of which were above the high tide line. By 1964, the friends finished construction on a wood frame, one-and-a-half story structure that sat on tall pilings. Described as a “3 bedroom gunning shack,” visitors had to climb stairs to get into the building. According to records, when the home wasn’t being used by family or friends, Valentine’s lodge played host to “politicians to businessmen…astronauts…diamond brokers…people from America’s Cup.” Some guests, like the diamond broker who supposedly paid to have a phone line put in at the lodge so he could conduct business while on the island, hunted. Others simply “ate and enjoyed life and drank beer.”

In February 1966, vandals burned the original structure. Valentine bought out his friends and rebuilt the house exactly as it was before. The new house (in the photo) was built on the same foundation around the original chimney that survived the fire. (Photos: NPS, Richmond Times-Dispatch)

yes I know.....................

Didn't vote for him because of his stance on restoring full voting rights to convicted felons.
I've met the man. Very decent fellow from what I could gather. Shows real concern & empathy for his fellow Virginians.

He has apologized.

What I don't understand (and maybe I've got this all wrong) is that his deed was in a Yearbook. In the 1980's.
Doesn't the school administration review yearbook content BEFORE it's published? I know mine did. And even if it's not the administration - there must be some group that is responsible for that - no?

So therefore - some group reviewed it prior to publication & obviously thought nothing about it.

Why?

Because in the 1980's wearing blackface was not considered in the same racist light it is today (I guess - I honestly don't recall).

So I find it odd - that a genuinely caring guy - who's doing a decent job - is being hung out to dry for something he did 40 years ago that at the time was not so unPC to do as it is today.

Or do I have this all wrong?

Wasn't he the editor for the yearbook? If so, and the fact that graduate school yearbooks are rare, and don't have faculty advisors/editors, it was a case of a fox guarding the hen house.

That being said, I agree as to the insanity of retroactively applying today's PC rules. We now live in a world where virtually all Mel Brooks' movies can't be viewed and Loony Tunes can no longer be aired.

not aware of him being the editor haven't seen that - if you've got a link - please share - because all I' getting at this moment is this.

I confused Republican VA Senate Majority leader Normet with Governor Northam. Normet was the editor of his yearbook, with the associated black face photos at VMI.

Don't forget Virginia was a bit behind LI in desegregation so like you said in 1980 it wasn't considered such a bad thing to do.
