The Onancock Chronicles the Eastern shore

Hey Wader, on another thread you mentioned there was no way you would kayak due to the US Navy and other large ships plying the Bay. But what about amongst all those islands just off the EASTERN shore (ocean side) of the eastern shore ?

The Eastern shore is a kayakers paradise ..... Maybe Wader was talking about down by the bridge tunnel area. Link to the site I got the picture from

among the Barrier Islands would be a really nice place to kayak if one where into kayaking....

Was taking something of a poetic license with the Bay side - as John said - kayaker's dream - I'm just not into kayaking having done 10 years in the Nissequogue River in a canoe.

Although - my brother did get me thinking about it again after I sold the boat. They actually have a winery tour along the Bay involving kayaks. Leaves from Onancock Creek & pulls in at the local winery(s). Doesn't sound real safe to me - but what the hey. You only live once.

My canoe is a 12 footer but with a 40 inch beam so stability was never an issue. Haven't used it in a decade and unlike my always garaged kayaks its relegated to under the deck. I haven't flipped yet in a yak and feel they are a bit safer than canoes. I am also not a spring chicken, going on 68.

Now that's something I'm looking forward to getting involved in ! ;)

Screw the paddling safety, what sounds dangerous to me is Eastern Shore Wine. Remember that Thomas Jefferson's wine experimentation ended in failure.

Since then some upscale wineries have sprung up on the hilly terrain with good drainage near Skyline Drive that make respectable, award wining wines because they can mimic the conditions of Bordeaux and Burgundy. However, the flat marshes of the Eastern Shore does not bode well for grape cultivation. That being said, I understand the Eastern Shore's premier winery, Chateau Roadkill Muskrat, boasts a Chardonnay with fine emetic properties...

Never, EVER, screw the paddling safety, LOL. (MY thing, but mainly that's because since my mid 20's I hardly imbibe at all. Really.)
Maybe they will have limo kayaks and/or designated paddlers ?

canoe was safe in the Nissy - I had pontoons on it that overhung the sides by 3 feet on each side - couldn't tip it - was able to get up & walk back & forth

I could (maybe still can) stand to cast in the lakes I took my canoe in. Without said pontoons I don't think I would try walking in it in a river !

was able to alk bow to stern 0 stepping over the benches - couldn't tip it - worked great - they were retractable
