This was not my car it was owned by a very good lifelong friend who passed away about a year ago, This car ran like a raped ape. A 1957 Ford set up old school. IIRC it had a big block 406, the motor was worked to the balls pushing almost 600hp on the dyno at Motion Performance. Fiberglass tilt nose front end, straight front axle, fender well headers, 4 speed, and I think 456 gears. We were in high school and years ago on Friday or Saturday night we would get on Hempstead Turnpike at New Hyde Park Rd and cruise out to Farmingdale where there was a Burger King on the north side of the road right before Zorns. There were plenty of muscle cars back then doing the same thing. The BK parking lot looked like a Vanguard Showroom. This car, CASPER, was very well known. At National Speedway it turned high 11’s - low 12’s. We would pull wheelies on Hempstead Turnpike getting the front end 4’ off the ground. I helped him install wheelie bars. I can’t count how many times we were both under the car changing the blown rear gears. Life was good back then. He went on to drag race bikes professionally, I think around 8, or 9 second 1/4 mile. Built many bikes, both racing and chopper. RIP Kenny.

Zoom in on the car you’ll see CASPER the friendly ghost.

Mid 70’s I frequented Bethpage Burger King in a black 67 Chevelle SS, then later a white 68 Charger RT. We would drag on route 109 starting at the rte 110 overpass and also behind Republic Apt on New Highway. Survived all that, now I’m rarely over 60mph.
Fun times

Yup, we did the same things. I love those Charger’s from that era. Very cool cars. Another friend of mine had a 69’ Chevelle. His car was a sleeper. Kind of a dingy yellow color, no badging, black vinyl top, bench seat, auto on the column, but under on hood an L88. Very rare car, and a screamer.

I'm watching this, strictly because of the car:

A 195X Mercedes-Benz 190 SL.

Little sibling to a 300SL Gullwing.

I grew up in one of these cars. I can remember every detail, like the truss rod on the windshield and the rearview mirror on the dashboard, and the ignition switch that said Fahrt which means Drive in German.

And the jack pockets with the tin cover in the body and the single green light between the VDO speedo and the VDO tach for the directionals, because the Germans assumed you knew which way you flipped the lever, to the clock in the glovebox door with the broken mainspring that I would try to wind eternally to get it to work.....

My father took one of these from Bohemia to Amityville in fifteen minutes, doing 120 MPH on the Sagtikos ramp. With a cop in the right seat, naturally.

And when he turned into that ramp his passenger was flailing for something to hang on to, but when the car hooked, he just sat back and folded his arms. Complete confidence. Racecar heritage.

I would love to find a relatively intact one to restore myself. But if I was going to drop six figures on a collector car... this would be the one. This is my grail.

Once I got lined up for the Bridgeport ferry, and what did I pull up on with the mighty TDI?

Dayum...

And it's actually a good romance/runaway bride flick. Plus it's almost entirely set in a 190 SL.
