Suicidal bite today, boat limits by 11am. I jigged with my spinner but then switched to my new Daiwa Catalina (thanks again Lep). Great day for its maiden voyage, that 4.9 gearing is sweet (y)
Thanks Lep - perfect timing for this gem. I just ordered mine (y)
However, please note that Discount Code is BBC10 (and their customer service was impressive)
Shallow water Tog jigging is the bomb, gets difficult in the deep though. I've found that the max weight you can use is 2.5 oz. When using more than that it's just too heavy for the Tog to 'lift and shift'. The 8 pounder pictured below is my biggest using a spinner, not quite a pig on a jig...
NY Bight Tog opens today (LI Sound opened last week). Here in NJ (where many NY boats started togging today) we can only keep one until 16-Nov, then it expands to 5. Yesterday my Brian caught the biggest Tog I have ever seen in person ... and he released it safely (y) WE didn't get a...
Two-hour pedal back to the launch - yowser ! Great stuff Roger, love your commentary. These fish never cease to amaze me. Half-ounce jig in the skinny or 24 ounces of lead off Nantucket - whatever it takes. Looking forward to your Fluker Primer vid (y)
I've been doing this trip every first weekend in August for 4 years now and I think I've finally zeroed in on the proper gear. I use a Phenix Megalodon rod rated PE4-8. Whatever reel you use should have a long power handle (not just a power knob). Hi--speed gearing helps reeling in from...
depending on constantly changing current, up to 28 oz ! But I was able to use merely 20 ounces most of the day. I rigged with naked hi-low : Gulp and fluke belly, most 'regulars' use popcorn hi-low rig. Cod/Pollock Jigging at Georges Bank was even heavier/deeper
Went to Nantucket Shoals this weekend - amazing Fluke quality. My just under 10 pounder wasn't even a pool contender. On second day we slayed the Haddock in 200' of water after Georges Bank codfishing in 300' yielded only Pollock. There's a new Mecca (y)
Big improvement in NJ ocean fishing this week. My team took 2nd place in Pt. Pleasant Elks fluke tourney with fish up to 8.5 pounds. Two interesting by-catches for me: a Ribbonfish (Cutlass Fish) and a 5' Dusky on my light spinner  Missed first place (and a small fortune) by a mere 3...
6" grub new colors: Sardine, Blue Fuse, Cajun Chicken, Lime Tiger, Curry Chicken, Orange Tiger, Red belly Shrimp, Mackeral, etc . . . but video proves that Glow White works well (y)
( I like all things tie-dyed )
Sandy Hook NJ concert series canceled after discovery of threatened shorebird nest . . . . Entire Jersey Shore concert series canceled after discovery of threatened shorebird nest
Thanks for posting Roger, your cousin proved that skiff + spearing is a waste of $$$. As you know we've been fishing the same stretch by boat (further down-river) and doing well. We did really well on Tuesday morning, last hour of the incoming was good, however first hour of out-going was...
Hey Roger : Green Island Access Area - Fluke :-)
^^ was quite sticky, a short flip to channel is productive but then you got to horse 'em over the rocks.
I know u wanna head East but Great Kills can be Killer
MY opinion: Governor Murphy brined the roads to the point where the salinity of the whole ocean is raised ! From the Asbury Park Press : ... the menhaden, called bunker colloquially, were probably chased into the creeks by seals and became trapped when the tide went out"...
