1996 Privateer Renegade I/O to Outboard Conversion

Sadly, no progress has been made. Skipping out fishing too much, mixed with trips to the eastern shore ...... I'm also not at my best in the heat we have had lately. I did pick up a portable air conditioner that I'm going to try out in the garage.

Soon as I get going again, I'll get back to posting pictures.

Capt13....not trying to hijack your thread....just following it...going to attempt it with my Steiger....just wanted to show ya what I'm working on.....?

Why are you doing it,blown motor or ya just bored

Probably another disciple of the "I/Os - The worst of Both Worlds Theory"...

I know two other converts who languished with the same reciprocating prop lower unit like Gary has.

Yeah....I repaired the engine twice, couple new pistons twice, heads rebuilt....so in 2015 I put in a brand new long block. This past September engine died...compression test showed #5 with 150+ PSI, all other cylinders were under 80PSI.
I had enough and pulled and sold the engine to a guy that wanted to rebuild it.Decided if I was gonna repower....it would be either a complete turn key drop in or an outboard. I talked with a few people who did the I/O Outboard conversion...a couple with the same boat as mine....and they were very happy with the results. I'm just still de3bating if it's worth the cost. A new drop in turn key package is about $12,000.....a bracket and outboard will run about $25,000. I got a price for a bracket, $3,930 and a 300HP Suzuki with gauges and controls for $19,500..........so that's where I'm at....stuck trying to decide....LOL

......actually.....that Volvo DuoProp unit is bullet proof.....it was new in 2003 and never once gave me trouble..........probably the best outdrive on the market. ? There's nothing wrong with the drive....it was the engine always giving me headaches.....(n)

Interesting, my friends, one of which had a Steiger too, had lift problems, universal problems and seal problems up the ying-yang.

Hey, Gary if it were me i would go with the OB all the way. I think about half of the small boats in FL are outdrives. Why i don't know . i have one myself, Why i don't know. The Merc. one i have is my fifth !!!! (Yeah im a looser). It's the same one i had when you gave me the steering piston. The problems i find with OD's is this. EVERYTHING. ok really, Worst designed steering system ever made. Worst designed shift linkage Ever, Motor cut out switch to get the gears out of fwd. Crappy system. Shifting linkage between gimbal and OD Crappy. and MORE !!

Now that's not to say that i hate them but when im through with my boat i will Not sell it with that system in it. I would sink the boat first.

Did i say i wast a big fan ??? :p

Sorry Cappy just had to get that out. On my way down now to work on my OD !!!!!

Finally managed to find couple hours the past couple weeks. Checked, re-checked and had a friend stop by to double check location and lines before I started drilling hole for the bracket. Drilled three holes and its on for a test fit and for marking the rest of the holes to be drilled.

Even though I sent photos and a detailed layout in regard to where I wanted mounting holes, the bracket still came with the standard mounting holes. I haven't contacted stainless marine about it yet. Seems you can't get anything done right anymore ....

I also encountered something new to me in regard to stainless bolts ....... galling. I'll get to that later.

The bracket was put on with two bolts holding it. Even though they sent the mylar template for bolt hole locations for the central part of the bracket, I wanted to mark them myself using the bracket in place.

In order to be as acurrate as possible, I used a 1/2" dowel as a spacer/guide and drilled a 1/8" hole thru the middle.

The red tape was added because the holes are actually slightly over sized for the 1/2" bolts. I think 17/32". The tape created a snug fit.

After I marked all the holes, I went to take the bracket off. One bolt locked up and I could no longer turn the nut either way. That is how I learned about Galling.
