Ha. Thanks! I remember the old Riptide. It used to be docked in Sunshine Marina in the Country Club section of the Bronx. Now it is waterfront two family homes.

All that’s left back there marina wise is Evers and a small private boat club.

Benny , do you remember or heard of 'Capt Charlie " , he lived close to Evers ........
Capt Charles 'worked for the Berlins , he usually had a few by 3 pm and kept many of us entertained with his radio chatter ...............He was a classic .....:)

I do not. I know Charlie who runs Evers marina though. He used to fly around in a seaplane.

"Capt Charlie' answered the phone for the Bronx Queen .... His on the air fights with his boss the late Ed Berlin were a classic ........ His daily radio banter kept the Partyboat and Lobster fleet entertained every afternoon at 3 pm for years , for awhile it was must listen to radio .....
I believe Pete Anderson would personally give him a hair cut every now and then ....
He died with no family one winter while the fleet was shut down , nobody was contacted , nobody from the fleet knew , and he ended up in Potters field on Hart Island just East of City Island ...
I and others felt terrible that he ended up there , in fact Capt Carl from the Riptide reached out to the City to see if we could take his remains and get him a proper burial .... Capt Carl was told that only immediate family could make that happen , he was denied .....It bothers me even to this date that we were unable to give "Capt Charlie " a 'proper ' burial .......
RIP "Capt Charlie "

Grabbed a quick lunch on City Island today. On the way to Johnny’s Reef I saw 3 guys casting by Turtle Cove and another tossing flies. Also, saw a guy fishing off of Stepping Stones. Not sure what he was up to. Maybe some C&R. Got a shot of Throgg’s Neck Bridge, Hart Island, and Stepping Stones

Surprised to hear the majority are thinking that the LIS bass bite last year was off in the western sound. I did great. I logged 49 bass in 33 trips. mostly fishing solo. I harvested 6 out of the 49, mostly due to gut hooking, which I'm trying some new techniques to lower that gut hook rate. I already use circles, but i'm adjusting my methods further to hopefully result in no gut hooking.

36 of the 49 were above 28 inches. Largest was 43 inches. I had very few skunked days. Best day I caught 7.

Can't wait for the season to get going!

UNCFISH - im in agreement with your assessment!

In 18 bass trips in the Western in 2018 (4/29 - 6/30), we landed 61 bass, largest was 43", most landed was 10 in a night/morning combo, and lost an appx 40lb fish boatside one night.

Tagged 39 bass with American Littoral Society tags, maybe kept a dozen all under 20lbs, usually only if guthooked. All big fish went back to swim.

Anyone have a water temp report so far? All the NOAA water temp buoys are down again...

2002-2010, a great trip in the sound was on 1 tide, 30+ keeper bass on the right structure. A bad trip in those years was 10 keeper bass in 1 trip.

Even last year, on the right structure we had 20+ fish trips in 1 tide but they were very limited instead of widespread amount of trips. Most trips last year were 3-8 fish a trip, which I dont consider good fishing. Good for now, but not even close to the way it used to be.

I am not trying to be conceded. Just my personal experience and from those I fish and associate with.

These #s are good for the way fishing is now but no offense, there were trips in 2008, 2009 and 2010 where we did 30+ keeper bass on 1 chunking trip fishing structure. The same structures that had the #s I'm listing are now de-void of life. Almost completely. Some days they yield great trips, but few and far between.

The days of charters doing 60+ keeper trips on structure are now gone. Fishing was ridiculous in the 2000s to right about 2010-2011.
2 years ago, there was a very good bite where a tide produced 15-25 keepers a trip but it was mostly on the troll.

Gotta reset your expectations. If I can go out and enjoy the boat and beauty of the sound and catch more than 1 striped bass on average, life is very very good. Not sure I’d still put a line in the water after a 10th bass. Would probably call it a night and head home.
