And so it begins in earnest. Large scale wind projects in the North East!!

Dumbest thing ever way more expensive than any traditional power , can this country get dumber? Let's keep building batteries from lithium only sourced in China instead of clean natural gas where American people get paid. These politicians are all on the dime anyone with any common sence would never waste money on this crap

Raw materials for making battery's are found all over the world..China maybe the number one country ,,But AU , Africa , and the America's also produce large amounts of raw materials ..
The US ranks # 15 in the world but AU & Canada rank # 2 & #4

Old Mud also makes a good point about our brief stint being "energy independent" under that last administration,. Most of the companies building these projects are indeed foreign and may not necessarily have our best interest in mind at all times.
France derives 70% of its energy needs from Nuclear Power. They generate so much - Germany was able to get all hypocritical & get rid of their nuclear plants saying they were "going green" - they are buying the power from France.

France to my knowledge has not had a single nuclear accident. Copy their plant designs.

how many American Nuclear accidents have we had since three mile island & how many of our nuclear navy ship & subs have had accidents...

it should be part of our plan to stop using coal & oil ..I'm ready for my nuke boat ..Eff oil, price went up 15 cents a gallon over night for marine diesel ..

other then the waste - the only thing they exude is water vapor - but mention building a Nuclear Plant & watch the public freak out

not in my backyard ,,But I want all the latest and greatest electronics ,,central AC , garden lighting so on & so on..and lets not forget to save the planet as I fly in my pvt jet... need to get the lobby and big money out of politics ..

my nephew is one step away from being a rocket Engineer ..working the past couple of year on a renewable energy project...he told me they have the technology for homes & cars..

I would be doing back flips if the fuel at my marina only went up 15 cents a gallon. Just took on some diesel last Friday for the first time since last November. Price was a full dollar a gallon higher! Talk about sticker shock!!!

yes up a dollar from last year... 15 cents over night ... I buy in bulk and get a little discount ..But still better than the GW years when it was almost five dollars a gallon

And I piss and moan about $3.10/gal ethanol-laced regular and $3.60/gal ethanol-free high test, loading the wheel barrow with 3 filled, 5-gallon jugs, and humping them down to my boat.

It's a happy problem living in a place with no restrictions regarding where and how you have to fuel up...

I have truck delivery ..to old for can's and wheel barrow ...

the 22 sea hunt has a 150 yami 4stroke 7 ro 8 miles a gallon ..one tank takes me through the season.. fill up before it goes in the water..

Good lord some of you guys are gullible. You've fallen for a pitch that was aimed at keeping coal fired plants around, while the rest of the world was decommissioning them - partly because of the nuclear fallout and pollution generated, and partly because they're not economically viable anymore.

We're not going to solve all of our problems with wind. Or solar. Or nuclear. But every step we take in each of those directions will create jobs, reduce our dependence on fossil fuels (that usually requires establishing relationships with some very unsavory characters in the Middle East, Venezuela and elsewhere), and improve our environment.

Literally - the rest of the world - save for countries that are too backwards to compare to the US - are going this route. The EU. China. The only thing you'd accomplish by not making these moves is ensuring that the US is completely obsolete in two hundred years.

Electric cars and renewable energy is the direction the rest of the world is going - we can either lead the way, keep up, or fall behind. And considering we're the world's largest superpower, we're alarmingly behind in this category. I'm not a huge fan of a lot of what Biden is doing - but this is 100% necessary. It's no different than Kennedy declaring we were going to the moon. This is a huge moment for engineering and technological development for this country.

@Fishing Nerd I agree we will all be driving an electric car. But there's a lot more to it than emissions. They are actually a better vehicle. I use a battery lawn mower and love it. My friends call it a "Fisher-Price" mower, but there's nothing like not having to worry about gas, oil, carb problems, and so on. I just pick it up and it works.

But ripping up the bottom of the ocean and littering it with fans that will be there forever, and then ripping up a 30-mile bottom can't be good for the environment. They kill thousands of birds a year and they've yet to come close to providing us with the power we need. Anyone remember Texas this year?

I think there are just too many unanswered questions on these projects, with often conflicting results.

George - have you ever visited or fished near an offshore oil rig? I have - they're an order of magnitude worse in terms of the impact on the surrounding ecosystem. Oddly enough, they do help the fishing.

Are you familiar with the massive oil spills that have occurred in the past two decades and the environmental devastation that resulted?

I don't think building some towers for wind farms is going to come anywhere close to the environmental damage that the petroleum industry currently creates.

I have fished oil rigs out of Texas a few times. But to equate these fans is wrong. Some will be floating. That's not going to help the fishing. And remember attracting fish to a spot does nothing to improve the fishery. Also, some will be single-cylinder fans, and they too do not attract fish.

We agree on saving the environment, I'm just not sold on a technology that uses fossil fuels should they fall short of their quotas. From what I understand many oil companies are invested in these. Why would that be?

Yes, the petroleum industry has its problems, but so do these windmills.

Do you have any thoughts on NYS deciding not to put fans within view of the Hamptons? If they're so good for the environment you'd think the Hamptonites would love to have them? But I guess their view is more important than the environment.

C'mon - the environmental impact to fishing from spills like the BP spill in the Gulf, the Exxon Valdez - are orders of magnitude worse for the environment than these farms.

The rest is just nonsense - why are the wealthy in the Hamptons able to prevent these from obstructing their view and not anyone else? Do I really need to have the 'life's not fair' speech with you? Or point out that rich people tend to get their way? Or how about the ridiculous assertion that they're all in favor of these - are you just assuming that only liberal or left leaning voters are wealthy? Don't be silly.

Last but not least - suggesting these are less than environmentally friendly because the oil companies are investing. I don't know how strong your business acumen is, but are you familiar with the story around Kodak and the digital camera? If not - you might want to do some reading. These oil companies are looking at their Kodak moment - they can either divest and get onboard with the way the rest of the world is moving (and remember - large oil concerns are not just a US thing, they are global companies). If they don't have holdings in renewable energies, they're going the way of the dinosaurs whose remains they go fishing for.

These farms are going to create good jobs in manufacturing and operations in this country - both segments that are shrinking, while service industries that employ a lot of people will be shedding jobs due to automation. The major downside to these farms is just capital outlay - it's going to take some time to get return on investment here.

What I'm suggesting is we are decades away from perfecting anything that will take the place of fossil fuels. I totally disagree with the industry facing their Kodak moment. These windmills will never make enough power to make a dent in that industry. And please don't tell me about the rest of the world. If we were to cut all of our emissions tomorrow it would only be 15% of total world emissions. As for the petroleum industry, I'm thinking their Kodak moment should have come when nuclear energy was introduced. For the record, I have always owned by own business, and I'm very familiar with the history of Kodak.

These fossil fuel companies are in it because the windmills simply can't produce enough power alone.

I'm all for renewals, and I'm not suggesting that liberals care for the environment more than conservatives. As I believe it's the other way around. But that's another story. But I don't buy the "good jobs" BS any more than I did when Obama said it. Remember Solyndra? Good luck getting a "good-paying job" there.

Another point no one mentions is the fact that they have a life expectancy of 15-20 years. And it's very expensive and in most cases impossible to dump them.

“The blades are kind of a dud because they have no value,” he said.

Decommissioned blades are also notoriously difficult and expensive to transport. They can be anywhere from 100 to 300 feet long and need to be cut up on-site before getting trucked away on specialized equipment—which costs money—to the landfill. Once there the size of the blades can put landfills in a tough spot.

“If you’re small utility or municipality and all of a sudden hundreds of blades start coming to your landfill, you don’t want to use up your capacity for your local municipal trash for wind turbine blades,” he said, adding that permits for more landfill space add another layer of expenses.

So in our case, they have decided that it will cost too much to decommission them so we are going to leave them littering the ocean. Is this good for the environment? There are hundreds of acres set aside for these monstrosities with the very real possibilities of it being expanded anytime the Gov't wants

Also, I'm curious what's going to power our airplanes, cruise lines, and much other heavy equipment? Should we put a giant rubber band on the front of an airplane and wind it up?

We both agree that something needs to be done, I just don't agree with this. And when you look real close at how this is being done ie: The staging for this project is coming out of Port Jefferson, and they're running all the way off the RI coast? Why not Montauk? Could it be that they don't want the noise and mess in Montauk? Or would they rather run the equipment an extra 30 miles or so?

I have tried numerous times to get them on a podcast yet no one will go on the record giving us a good explanation of the details. And as we know that's where the devil is :)

Look on the bright side @george!! All those decommissioned blades, floating platforms and other stuff, would make excellent artificial reefs, and there wouldn't be any reason to transported them. You could just sink them right where they sit!! Won't make the trawlers happy, but every other fishing business wouldn't be upset...

FWIW, in the North and Norwegian Seas, decommissioned well platforms aren't removed. Once they're stripped, the frames just sit there, so in the case of fixed windmills, pull off the blades and drop 'em in the water!!

Remember, the sun doesn't always shine and the wind doesn't always blow. So where do we store the energy needed for households and hospitals on those rainy days - more lithium mining? We're going to be SEVERELY challenged just to mine enough lithium for cars and trucks. I'm looking forward to electric air travel. 8-)

I'm sorry my good friend,. but I think we're using the ocean as a trash can too much already.
