Coronavirus

Damn it, at times I hate it when I'm right and this is one of those incidents of self-loathing. Early on when folks started talking "Herd Immunity Numbers" we'd see numbers as low as the 50-60% range, which I professionally couldn't agree with, believing that true herd immunity needed to be in the >80% range.

I guess this was just another one of too many "America: You can't handle the truth" moments that COVID has dumped on us.

In the pandemic’s early days, Dr. Fauci tended to cite the same 60 to 70 percent estimate that most experts did. About a month ago, he began saying “70, 75 percent” in television interviews. And last week, in an interview with CNBC News, he said “75, 80, 85 percent” and “75 to 80-plus percent.”

In a telephone interview the next day, Dr. Fauci acknowledged that he had slowly but deliberately been moving the goal posts. He is doing so, he said, partly based on new science, and partly on his gut feeling that the country is finally ready to hear what he really thinks.

Hard as it may be to hear, he said, he believes that it may take close to 90 percent immunity to bring the virus to a halt — almost as much as is needed to stop a measles outbreak.

Asked about Dr. Fauci’s conclusions, prominent epidemiologists said that he might be proven right. The early range of 60 to 70 percent was almost undoubtedly too low, they said, and the virus is becoming more transmissible, so it will take greater herd immunity to stop it.

Dr. Fauci said that weeks ago, he had hesitated to publicly raise his estimate because many Americans seemed hesitant about vaccines, which they would need to accept almost universally in order for the country to achieve herd immunity.

U.S. Vaccine Rollout Now Among Best In the World

“America’s much-maligned vaccine rollout is actually going relatively well, at least compared to other wealthy countries,” Axios reports.

“The U.S. has carried out more vaccinations than any country in the world, and given a first dose to a higher percentage of its population (12%) than all but five countries: Israel, the Seychelles, the UAE, the U.K. and Bahrain.”

“In fact, the U.S. is distributing doses three times as quickly as the EU, adjusted for population, and nearly five times as quickly as Canada.”

New York has fallen behind Kalifornia for a death total. If our governor doesn't do something again, Texas may pass us and put us in third place !

Well I spoke too soon - been knocked out today from my second shot - fell asleep on the coach around 1 - woke up at 5:30

It should be over by tomorrow. You were lucky to sleep through the worst. That is my goal ! I am already dreading getting my booster Friday. But it beats getting the virus and possibly its aftermath. Here is hoping there will be some sort of fraud-proof vax verification system if that is what will be required to travel internationally.

When it comes to medicine, I HATE words like "May" or "Might".

Fauci needs to state facts not speculation. I understand he has a new found freedom from this administration but tell us truisms!

What everyone wants to know is "Can I be a carrier"?

Understood.......HOWEVER scientists should present facts and NOT speculate!

Sweden speculated on herd immunity and made policy based on theoretical scenarios.......how did that work out?

Pharmacists at Inova Health, one of the largest hospital systems in the Washington, D.C., area, say they started noticing significant amounts of leftover vaccine in almost every vial, even after they used the additional sixth doses in Pfizer’s vials. But because of the FDA’s regulations, they are being forced to throw out any extra vaccine.

“It’s heartbreaking for us,” Massiah-White said. “We’ve had multiple team members that rotate through here, and at least daily somebody says, ‘Why can’t we pool the waste?'”

The Inova pharmacists did an experiment, taking 100 vials that had residual vaccine. Eighty of them had significant amounts left over. The pharmacists found that with the vaccine left in the 80 vials, they could make 40 additional full doses. That meant that on a typical vaccination day, when the hospital will typically give more than 4,000 shots, it could give an additional 400 vaccination shots with the same supply.

There are so many critical safety reasons for tossing what's left in a vial. This study was just to earn headlines. Any 1st year Pharmacy student knows why.

I just looked into these new sites. The line that is missing is the ** which stands for restricted by residency. So apparently if you're not a NYC resident, you can forget about these sites. Here in Suffolk, we're still out of luck.

did you check with your doctor?

That's where I received my two shots of the vaccine. Didn't even know he was administering them until his office called me & asked if I'd like to come in.

Fake news from NBC?
Not "Fake News," but irresponsible behavior from Inova Health announcing an extremely dangerous idea, and something they should know better about. It's just an anathema and they know that, but it made a headline for them. It elicited an immediate Nerf ball barrage at the TV when I heard it this morning. The Medical Expert of the network I was watching immediately made it clear that this is not a valid idea.

I could go on for pages on this, but suffice it to say ones does NOT pool leftover amounts of any drug without an explicit FDA-approved protocol which would also specify what sort of facility pooling should be done in, timing allowed for said pooling, storage conditions, etc.

FDA should start working on that. lol.
