Fluke Bucktailing Blanks

Not all rods are made by slave labor. That’s a ridiculous over statement.

But remember, so is much of just about everything else made over there. Nike? Almost everything electronic? Same, same.

As long as people around the world continue to buy, the CCP will continue with their abhorant behavior. This cannot be stopped from here. Not without a shooting war.

We’ve killed enough of our youth in unwinable B/S wars. Enough. Sooner or later the Chinese people have to take care of this. Its on them to clean up their own house.

Meantime how’s about the effing useless UN goes in there and starts certifying which products are produced “Slave-free?” Maybe they could actually do something useful for the hundreds of millions they manage to burn through every year.

And that’s “Lep’s political thought for today.” ?

Thats true Phenix are not..

one of the names he gave me was one of the biggest...I dont buy their product..

didnt say slave ..dont put words in my mouth..China doesnt have slaves right? I think the correct term is political prisoners ...you know anyone that speaks out about the leaders...all the fake news spreaders

and we know it doesnt go on in this country paying a prisoner a nickel an hour isnt slave labor right ?

Forced labor = slave labor. To-may-to/To-mah-to. A difference without a distinction.

We don’t pay prisoners a nickel an hour. More over exaggeration. Are you having a bad day? Lol! ;)

For that matter, those American criminal reprobates should be paying us for the exhorbitant expense of feeding/clothing/ housing their felonious asses, whilst they work off their debts to society. Don’t wanna go to jail? Great! Stop doing illegal stuff. There, problem solved. So easy!

Now enough with the off-topic stuff. The man has asked about rod blanks suitable for his use. Let’s keep it tracking in THAT direction.

Hot, me? Is that how you read my responses? Lol, its all good and a bit amusing. Richie, come on now. This board’s stated mission is solely the mutual sharing of information about fishing in this area. Everyone is welcome to contribute. Even those that have products they wish to sell. All good. In your case we all get to learn something when you speak.

What is not good is talking down the offerings of other very reputable vendors, even those that do not even know of the existence of this board. The quality of your work speaks for itself. No need to go negative on the competition.

I’ve been a direct salesman for over 40 years. I have never felt the need to talk down my competitors. Even when they’re busy talking trash to prospective clients. Even then I will not descend to their level. I still sell by highlighting the advantages of my products. Maybe that’s an old-fashioned concept, but I’m an old-fashioned kind of guy. Somehow I‘ve usually managed to exceed my annual sales goals.

You are welcome to continue to post here anytime, and I do look fwd to reading your posts. But please, as a personal favor to me, stay on the high road. Tell us why your products excel. Not what’s wrong with other rod builders/sellers. I appreciate and value that kind of info from you. I’m sure that’s also the view of the majority of our members, as well.

I believe in the truth.letting the customers know the truth so they get what the pay for...dont have many rich customers some yes ..they work very hard for their money & should get the what the pay for...

I was in the ultra high end furniture business for many years...your as good as your last job..like fisherman they tend to live , work & play in the same zip code...so word of mouth is better that anything..

I am fortunate and can pick and choose who I build and sell to ...but when I do I always try my best to build the best rod on the best blank at the best price possible ...no thousand dollar Calstars here..

Richie - Am I getting through, or is diplomacy truly a lost art?

Running down a competitive product is not permitted here. If you feel that is something you can’t live with, that’s fine, then perhaps this is not the place for you.

Like I wrote earlier, your positive contributions would be missed, so please consider my last paragraph before posting again in such a manner.

I didn’t want it to get to this point, and I therefore spent a ton of time twisted my posts into pretzels to try to keep this civil. But am I now being direct enough?

Call me old fashioned but I still like the lamiglas glb 841m. Yes it is discontinued bit the glb961m is close and can be cut more than the 7'. The uncut tip handles 1 1/2 to 5 oz well. Headed out to Sea Isle now to pick up one I had finished before the shutdown and check out the new tri flex v2 's

Yes, I know that blank. We used to use it to cast bucktails to bass under the local bridges, from our boats. I think they used to call it the "John Demaio Special," because he used it extensively for casting bucktails to bass swimming in the Montauk rocks, and talked it up in his famous, now out of print book " Fishing With The Bucktail." The Lami GLB series are still nice pieces, though a bit dated. In the wrong hands they had a tendency to blow up on strong hook sets, but if used with some intelligence, they held up just fine.

Another great one was/is the Calstar GX7 - for fluking, I mean. A nice departure from Calstar's usual extra-fast tips, it has a very sweet, moderate action. I still have a custom-built pair of them, cut 6" from the butt and a tiny bit from the tip, like an inch or so, and they are still KILLER fluke jiggers.

Once you have cut off that ponderous butt section, they are quite light in the hand and fish like a much more modern mod-action stick. Why did I stop using them? Who knows? I can be dumb that way, I guess. Always chasing the latest/greatest, when I already own well proven, fun to use, really good stuff hanging in my basement, all dying of loneliness. Its a sickness. . .

I thought I had one of mine sold this Spring, but the Wuhan Flu. put that sale on delay - the poor guy took a forced lay-off. Meh, no hurry. If he still wants it later on, fine by me. Beautiful wrap job, by the way, by none other than the great Mark Flynn. As good as any rod builder that ever turned a rod. A wonderful guy too. His leaving the business to go off to be an LIRR Conductor was a big loss to the local fishing community, imo. I for one really miss our in-depth Saturday morning tackle talks over a cup of coffee from the adjacent McDonald's, here in Wantagh.

Lep, that's exactly what that blank is John DeMaio's bucktail rod. Long story shortened, a friend of mine was friends with him and john gave us one to copy over the winter many many moons ago. Shorten that blank to 6'6 leave tip as is and it still make a very good fluke rod. Still use them today and lend them to my charter customers.

Mark Flynn, oh boy your going back a long time. I met him at Sea isle long before he went out on his own. Excellent rod builder, top 1% in his thread art IMHO. I did the electrical work in his store. Would drive out after a days work and work until the wee hours. He sold me my first gx7 and gfx 800ml. Great rods for the intended purpose but very heavy.

CaptFP - do you know the story behind the GFX series of moderate-action Calstar blanks?
Of course i do never forget it. Supposedly I bought 2 of the first batch that they ordered. Got a call from Mark saying they were almost gone, awesome tog rod, caught fish without even being in the same country....yada yada. Could of been marketing. Need to catch the fisherman before it catches fish right?

I fish a CTS SBD 700 made by Rich, and have to say its the best rod in my arsenal and the first rod i grab for bucktailing, I take this rod over all the other high end rods i have include my BH challenger, JW Shoguns and a few other high end factory rods. The tip of the rod is perfect for bucktailing and once hooked up the rod has awesome parabolic action and takes the head shakes of large fluke very well. Caught this 9lber on miss montauk on Monday on my cts and it was breeze. I fish the 700 up to 4oz and will be adding a 701 once I save up enough funds.

What’s the main difference between the SBD and BJ lineups? Looking at the 700 for both series. I slightly overestimated max bucktail weight. After using 6+ oz in Nantucket last weekend, I found that my practical need is closer to 4 oz. I can chicken rig on a different setup.
