Landscaping

Hey all - I have a gravel driveway apron about 19x13 that has old compacted gravel that has totally lost grade and holds huge puddle spots when t rains. I started ripping it up today with some shovels and other tools. Question, can a tiller do the job to loosen it up? Any other equipment reco's (I don't have the budget to hire a bobcat/operator)? And i want to actually do this myself, just don't want to break my back. :) will add pics.i got through about a 4x13 section today.

Thanks!

Hahah. Good idea on the jack hammer. Thx gotta see if the rental equipment places are open on the island?

some hardware stores rent 'em -try Home Depot &/or Lowes as well - had to get one to remove some asphalt - rental was $50 for the day - came up real easy - sure - I was shakin' for a day or two afterward but worked like a charm...

The power equipment shop in East northport isn’t doing rentals but I’ll check HD and Lowe’s nearby. ? thanks !

Thanks! Commack HD didn’t have a jack hammer they said for me to call The Dear Park store in the morning. They have more selection. If not I’ll try ace in northport

Jack hammer gonna be a waste on compacted gravel it aint concrete get a sledge hammer beat it up

The jack could at least separate the gravel easily. I used an old flat shovel which worked ok to separate the softer spots. takes too long though. but should have brought a new one today. Sledgehammer is just going to pound it up like a chicken cutlet.

You can use a pick ax to break it up. I would think that would make quick work out of it. Not easy but would work

have you ever tried a pick ax on asphalt - concrete? You'll wear yourself out within 20 minutes.
Same thing for a sledge hammer.

Trust me. I tried both before I went for the jackhammer.
Why do you think highway crews use them when doing road work?

Where did he mention "asphalt concrete"? I thought he said he has "old compacted gravel"
