Red Light Cameras on Long Island

We're discussing Rude NY Drivers, not me. You don't drive aggressively in another state and honk a native. That rude NY driver had no idea I was a tourist. I'm very respectful when I'm driving in another state knowing I don't live there . Honking the horn, shining lights is aggressive driving and I guess many of you do the same. The only time I flash my lights is when I'm driving behind a drunk. So don't accuse me of doing anything wrong. AND IF I'M DRIVING AT THE SPEED LIMIT IN ANY LANE YOU GOT NO RIGHT TO SHINE YOUR LIGHTS. I guess the Rude NY drivers are you people. Sure sounds like it. And Remember , Your Car computer records your speed . Get into an accident going 75 and they got you.

Nope, If you think every lane is to be treated equally and have no idea of road etiquette you would be the problem and the rightful recipient of someone's ire. Headlight flashing at someone who is hogging the passing lane is common practice and only considered aggressive by people who don't understand lane etiquette. There's a reason cars have that feature.

Yes, it's a pet peeve of mine.

I rarely drive in the Passing lane , but I'll go into the passing lane to pass a slow moving truck or a long line of cars and drive at the speed limit until I pass the truck and cars. I'm going 65 at the speed limit and a bunch of cars behind me wanna do 85 and shine their lights at me to get me to change lanes. That's illegal. As soon as I pass the slow moving vehicles I'm back in the slow lane and no driver is forcing me to change lanes until I made my pass. The passing lane is not a passing lane for most people, it's a lane to speed.

Well, speed enforcement is not your job, but as long as you move over A.S.A.P. I'll give you a pass.

It’s all political
You just refuse to admit it

here’s a news flash
It’s going to get worse as time goes on
Everything is clouded by politics has been for a very very long time
The rub is the rights no longer being silent and cotowing to to left

your really going to have to get used to it
But I dont have to get use to it here I will simply delete it

11 Maddison not that hot
Per se bright moments but nothing to rave about

Name a place of note I’ve more than likely been in it

and it’s not that most aren’t good
It’s that they aren’t as good as they once were or the really great ones can’t survive
Because dining habits have changed and ppl won’t dine like they once did

I'll make a motion to get this thread back to the original concept (a question was never really asked). Red light cameras - good or bad? It might not be a 100% answer one way or the other.

Stats say accidents at these intersections are down - good, yes?
We're getting ticketed for going thru red lights, more so than if we rely on cops to enforce this - good or bad? Could go either way, depending on who you speak to
Result 1 is more cars obey the red light - good, yes?
Result 2 is your commute may take a wee bit longer - bad? Hardly

Correlation does not equal causation. IOW there may have been a less punitive solution than just hitting people with the enforcement hammer.

Most of the accidents at intersections are a result of poor traffic engineering and could be resolved with simple adjustments like longer yellows and all-red pauses. One step I would like is to see a countdown timer for the yellow. We see it at some intersections with crosswalks, but it's not universal. I realize that an actual timer display near the light is not in the US traffic code, but they exist in other countries and could be adopted here.

The problem with the real solutions is that they require effort and expenditure whereas the cameras cost the county nothing and generate revenue. Which option do you think your "leaders" will go for?

Hmmmm,...

Well Presented Mr.Avenger,

wonder if any of these anti bad driver peeps, stand at an average intersection and observe the whole cycle from Green, to Yellow, to Red and then Green for the cross flow, it’s 5 SECONDS max… cellfish…

Very well put.

I agree that adjustment to light timing should help reduce accidents, which is something I think everyone can agree upon is a good thing.

Now what about that one occasional outlier that just doesn't want to stop? Or stop then go through a red light? I've seen it plenty of times. Do/should we have enforcement? I think the answer will differ from the person driving through the red light and the person seeing others go through as they sit at the red light.

Adjust the timing first, then go to step two… video cameras will give a better result at crashes… cellfish…

Yeah, that.

I would expect that if intersections were properly engineered you'd see non-compliance drop to such a low level that traffic cameras wouldn't be profitable. If that's the case, then for the occasional outlier, because there's always that one farknut in a BMW that thinks the rules don't apply to them, then enforce away.

They got the lights set up to slow people down, but all it does is make people drive fast between lights to avoid a red light and are going very fast thru intersections. I saw in parts of Manhatten they got lights that keep turning Green as you drive, drive too fast and you gotta slow down near the red light, so you pace yourself to keep traveling .
All over LI you see lights all bunched up about 200 feet apart, one turns Green , you drive 200 feet and stop , on and on . It's ridiculous and frustrates a lot of drivers. So many drivers on the road and they slow you down to a crawl. Certain roads like Hempstead Turnpike in Nassau should have lights that continually turn Green and you drive according to how fast the next light turns Green. You wouldn't have people driving 75 thru a Red Light.
