The Onancock Chronicles the Eastern shore

It is advertising a second habitable structure on the property - unless it's attached to the main house it is not legal in Onancock - there are no legal secondary detached buildings permitted in the current Zoning that are acceptable as living spaces - the only reason I know this is - being on the Planning Commision we just turned down a woman's request for a special use permit for a secondary structure on her property that the realtor told them could be approved as a Home Stay with a zoning variance - Town is very much against this. To say the least - she is not a happy camper

so ....... I got an inside guy on the planning commision. Excellent.

The inside looks good. May need a roof and siding.

I don't care for the house over the three bay garage. I wouldn't want to be walking up those steps all the time.

The steps are an issue ....... but most everywhere I looked, if you want your boat in your backyard, there are going to be steps involed.

Hi Guys,

Am enjoying reading the banter. My story is about 35 years old. Around 1975 taxes forced my family to move to Virginia, Eastern Shore. About 5 years later my mother and father moved back north across the bridge to Melfa, a short drive to Onancock. My father did a ton of casting from the shore lines at Sunrise and again at Sunset. My father also like fresh bakery products so he would stop at the local bakery on his way home from Sunrise fishing. If memory serves me correct the bakery was in Onancock. Many times the bakery was closed and my father could not find out why. Finally, my father meets the baker and asks him, WHY? The bakers answer, The stripers were biting! That answer my father could handle as it made sense to him. The 10-15 years my parents lived down there was very good for them. The warmer climate, being near salt water and farm lands, the people, and the local hospital staff took very good care of my parents.

Good fortune to you folks down there.

Neil

Hi Neil - yes - the bakery is in Onancock (seems to be known all around the Shore) - they only basically do donuts, crullers & stuff like that - pastries. Called the Corner Bakery.

Same ownership for who knows how long. The original owner/baker just recently passed away in his mid 90's. From what I've heard told - he still came in pretty much every day.

Liked your story. You know it's pretty amazing for such a small little town in an out of the way area - there seem to be so many connections to it. Like yours. Melfa is about 5 miles south of me.

Closed because the rockfish are biting. I gotta tell ya you can't get a contractor or nearly anyone to work on your house or whatever during two periods of the year.

  1. Opening of Hunting Season or
  2. Opening of the striper season (which is pretty much now - opened in December) - picking off all the bass you guys missed as they return to their wintering grounds in the Chesapeake

Virginia's present Governor was also born & raised in Onanacock.

I keep running into people who either visited or grew up here in some of the most unexpected social situations.

No Rock or Ledges or Lobstahs ....... but, from what I hear, Blue claw crabs right off the dock and BIG striped bass and oystahs. :)

Crabs yes, Orsters, probably, BIG bass, doubtful. All the spawning takes place on the other side of the bay...

crabs & oysters a plenty - the entire Eastern Shore has nothing but Oyster Festivals from October into December all up & down the Shore....

There are big bass to be found from my understanding but you need to know where to go for them. Apparently this is a closely guarded secret.
Reference that thread in one of the boards under Pigzilla. Which as you said is on the other side of the Bay.

There is one spot I've heard mummerings about over on this side. In looking at a navigational map I bought I believe I know where it is.
Entrance to Pokomoke Sound, just east of Watt's Island there is a BIG drop off. At low tide it goes from 16 feet or so to 95+...

It's about 6 to 10 miles northwest of the entrance to Onancock Creek & runs for approximately 9 to 10 miles to the north once you're over it into the Sound. Depths range from 68 to 96 feet all along its length at low tide with shallow water surrounding it.

Had I dared to actually keep the boat - that was an area I wanted to explore. Alas...............

Maybe John'll move down here bringing his boat with him and we can explore it.
(y)

Better be careful Wader or you're gonna get overrun with NY'ers.
If I was you, I'd start focusing on telling everybody the negatives LOL:p:LOL::ROFLMAO:

Well keep your boat and go find them !! :)

Eastern Shore is looking better all the time. I clammed to pay for college .... never lost my love for it. Still hold my commercial license. Was just reading that Virginia leads the U.S. in aquaculture production of the hard clam.
I also found out that the Eastern Shore is where a good portion of this aquaculture is taking place.
