Coronavirus

I remember heading to my genetics class in such bad shape. I threw up in a planter on the second floor of the science wing before I made it into the classroom.

PS i was pretty skinny back then

no wonder - going around throwing up into planters all the time.........

Fashion Statement aside - is this really any more effective?

Yes, more is better. I double mask when I go into relative confined areas. Reminds me of the old joke about why Valley Girls use 2 diaphragms? To be "For sure, for sure!"

Very heartening, people who can actually think on their feet!!

Health Workers, Stuck in the Snow, Administer Coronavirus Vaccine to Stranded Drivers

Public health workers in Josephine County, Ore., said they had walked from car to car, giving shots to drivers with vaccine doses that would expire in six hours.

The public health workers were driving back from a vaccination site in rural Cave Junction, Ore., on Tuesday when they got stuck in a snowstorm on the highway.

They knew they had only six hours to get the remaining doses of coronavirus vaccine back to people who were waiting for their shots in Grants Pass, roughly 30 miles away. Normally, the trip takes about 45 minutes.

But with a jackknifed tractor-trailer ahead of them, the crew realized they could be stuck for hours and the doses would expire.

So the workers made the decision to walk from car to car asking stranded drivers if they wanted to be vaccinated, right there on the spot.

“We had one individual who was so happy, he took his shirt off and jumped out of the car,” said Michael Weber, the public health director in Josephine County, Ore.

Another recipient, he said, was a Josephine County Sheriff’s Office employee who had arrived too late for the clinic in Cave Junction but ended up stuck with the others on her way back to Grants Pass.

Most drivers laughed at the offer of a roadside coronavirus vaccine and politely declined, even though Mr. Weber said he had a doctor and an ambulance crew on hand to help oversee the operation. He acknowledged it was not the typical setting for a vaccination.

“It was a strange conversation,” Mr. Weber said. “Imagine yourself stranded on the side of the road in a snowstorm and having someone walk up and say: ‘Hey. Would you like a shot in the arm?’”

Still, Mr. Weber said the public health workers had administered all six doses of the Moderna vaccine to six grateful drivers.

Mr. Weber called it “one of the coolest operations” he had ever been a part of and said it had been an easy decision to administer the shots on the highway.

“Honestly, once we knew we weren’t going to be back in town in time to use the vaccine, it was just the obvious choice,” he said. “Our No. 1 rule right now is nothing gets wasted.”

Going to be interesting when they attempt to get the second shot...

This is NOT good news, but a good benchmark to let all of us realize the magnitude of the achievement of the lipid nanosphere mRNA vaccines from Moderna & Pfizer!! J&J is like AstraZeneca in that they both use an adenovirus in the vaccine to bring the cellular instructions for making the spike protein. Will be interesting to see how the AstraZeneca data parse out.

Johnson & Johnson Covid-19 vaccine is 66% effective in global trial, but 85% effective against severe disease, company says

The one shot would have been nice though. I’d like to see numbers for how many miss their second shot.

From what I understand, pretty close to the J&J numbers, but once again, that's interpolation of data, a dicey game at best.

I was a bit harsh before. The epidemiologists are more upbeat in that the J&J is single dose and only needs refrigeration. IF it was the only game in town we'd all be singing its praises. AND any shot in the arm, is better than none.

Not exactly Gene. The Nursing Homes contend that the hospital reported the deaths in their totals so the Nursing Homes didn't have to.
One of my colleagues lost his FIL to COVID in the nursing home debacle. The family has an attorney and as you posted, the death was reported at the hospital level, not the nursing home itself. So no, NOT additional deaths, just a different allocation. Thank you for posting!

So let me see....the nursing homes were asked to keep their covid patients where they were if able to handle them to alleviate the pressure on the hospitals at that time and many or some died just as in the hospitals

Daughter was a administrator till this passed week for one in Huntington. She said didn’t matter, was no “If you can handle” just a “Deal With It”.
